For many fans, the first Matrix film is the only true home run of the franchise with the subsequent sequels and the recent Matrix Resurrections being much maligned and hated throughout the community. Love ’em, hate ’em or just like ’em, there’s no denying that the entire IP rejuvenated sci-fi action for a whole new generation and the introduction of bullet time was a groundbreaking achievement. Of course, I enjoy all the entries for certain reasons, and I even liked the latest entry even though the fight sequences were severely lacking due to the fact that Hong Kong icon Yuen Woo Ping wasn’t involved. Ping’s signature stamp on the amazing set pieces in the previous films was undeniable and Resurrections was like a whole other experience, and it wasn’t great.
Well, it’s time to go down the rabbit hole again and choose the red pill as it was announced yesterday that Warner Bros. is in active development on a fifth Matrix installment with Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) centering the ring to helm it and pen the script. At this time, Goddard’s involvement is the only key announcement as it is unclear if series stars Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving, and Jada Pinkett Smith will return. In my opinion, Reeves and Moss definitely have to return for this to be any kind of a Matrix movie and putting on totally new actors will DOA it before it even comes up.

In the Deadline article, Goddard commented on the news saying. “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”
Jesse Ehrman, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures President of Production added, “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters. The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”
The only legit thing here is that fans will be vocal throughout the entire pre-production process as well as filming and post until the final product is revealed. Serious fans will probably condemn this entry from the starting gate, which is par for the course, but you all know that I reserve judgment until I see first look footage. Resurrections had so many problems, even more than Revolutions, but I still liked it and visit it every now and again when I watch the franchise. We. Shall. See.
