A new year is upon us and with it the promise of another round of action cinema to satisfy the masses. 2023 started out strong but ultimately ended with a whimper so it’ll be interesting to see how much stamina 2024 has in terms of delivering satisfying adrenaline laced entertainment.
I’m introducing a new series for the year titled the Action Sneak Peek where I cover a highly anticipated offering that is coming this year. It’s only fitting that my first article of ‘24 would include the names Grillo and Adkins.
Yep that’s right, first up, we have a film that serves up, not one but two, two action gods for the price of one with Frank Grillo and Scott Adkins teaming up to take down the bad guys Kickboxer/Road House style in the action-thriller Lights Out. Quiver Distribution is readying the movie for a February 16th, 2024 release and we have a look at the first poster featuring Grillo, Adkins and the sensational supporting cast including Jaime King, Mekhi Phifer (Truth Be Told) and Dermot Mulroney (Section Eight, Hanna) below!
The official plot for Lights Out sees Grillo starring as a drifting ex-soldier who turns underground fighter with the help of a just released ex-con, pitting them both against corrupt cops and hired killers gunning for them and all those they care about.
Lights Out comes to us from a solid behind the scenes action crew that includes director Christian Sesma who is no stranger to action having helmed other action pics like Section 8 and Every Last One of Them. Both solid entries in the genre. Sesma is a talent in the indie action circle and with talent like Grillo and Adkins in front of the camera, this is a no brainer for action fanatics.
Lights Out also hails from a script written by action auteur Chad Law who really needs no introduction of your a series action fan. His filmography of films that he has written is long and distinguished and here he shares writing duties with Garry Charles who also is solid having also teamed up with Law on The Getback which was a highlight of 2023.
We are yet to see a trailer for the movie and a proper release date but this is one project that entices electric enthusiasm from fans alike because it’s sure to deliver brutal, sweat inducing action in the form of machine guns and bare knuckle carnage. I’ll bet that the film’s two action stars will have plenty to do and will be given the proper amount of screen time to do it this giving audiences what they crave.
It doesn’t hurt that the filmmakers describes the movie as the essential love child of two action classics in Kickboxer and Road House and even though that’s a lot of hype to live up to, I’m sure these two bad asses are up to the challenge. There is just something about an action movie that combines the best of both worlds in ferocious firepower and bone breaking MMA brutality. I mean a movie that just has one of those elements is always welcome but when there’s both…Win!
