One of the most beloved stories of any generation and certainly one of mine has to be Alexander Dumas’ classic story of swashbuckling and heroism The Three Musketeers has been told countless times through screen and print. A few of my go to movies of this beloved story includes Disney’s The Three Musketeers which featured Keifer Sutherland and Charlie Sheen in their prime as well as The Musketeer which was a bomb at the box office, but it is one I watch on occasion as I love the ambitious action set pieces that infused Hong Kong centric fight choreography for a more different approach. I love sword flicks and when you have Dumas’ story done right, well then nothing can touch it even with the deadliest of sabres.
Hold on tight fans because The Three Musketeers is going to get its most faithful film adaptation yet and more so because it will take two movies to tell it. Samuel-Goldwyn Films and Pathé are rendering a faithful adaptation with the first movie titled The Three Musketeers: Part I – D’Artagnan which will convey the origin story of how the youngest Musketeer came to be.

Official Synopsis: In the first entry, D’Artagnan, a spirited young Gascon, is left for dead after trying to save a young woman from being kidnapped. When he arrives in Paris, he tries to find his attackers. He is unaware that his quest will lead him to the heart of a real war where the future of France is at stake. Allied with Athos, Porthos and Aramis, three musketeers of the King with a dangerous temerity, D’Artagnan faces the dark machinations of the Cardinal of Richelieu. But it is when he falls madly in love with Constance Bonacieux, the Queen’s confidante, that d’Artagnan truly puts himself in danger. For it is this passion that leads him into the wake of the one who becomes his mortal enemy: Milady de Winter.
To bring this faithful retelling to life involves a star-studded French cast that includes Francois Civil (Call My Agent!), Vincent Cassel (Black Swan), Romain Duris (Eiffel), Pio Marmaï (Happening), Eva Green (Casino Royale), Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) and Louis Garrel. Martin Bourboulon helmed both entries from a screenplay written by the team of Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de La Patellière.
The Three Musketeers: Part I – D’Artagnan was actually already released in its native France back in April and was well received while doing bank at cinemas garnering 35 million at the worldwide box office. Samuel Goldwyn Films is set to launch film number one on December 8th which is just two days shy of my 51st birthday. It will hit theaters and Digital at the same time. The second installment will land sometime in 2024 so unfortunately, we have a bit of a wait to see how it all ends with the epic finale.
I think I’m going to have to watch all my favorite versions to properly amp myself up and actually I still have to view Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers for a first time. That version was maligned upon release also but once again, I don’t listen to anyone but me.
In the meantime, check out the official trailer for The Three Musketeers: Part I – D’Artagnan below and witness the reimagining of the classic story with its most faithful version yet!
