Welcome to FOOT FIST FRIDAYS! A weekly dose of fight action where the Action-Flix.com experts share their thoughts on some of the greatest scenes of fisticuffs in action cinema history!
This week, resident contributor The Cinema Drunkie tackles a film that has pretty much divided the Fanboy Nation ever since it was released. That’s right folks. It’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. You either love the film or hate it, and personally here at Action-Flix we love it, but there’s no denying that it’s nothing short of comic book heaven seeing these two DC Titans go head to head for the first time ever on the big screen. Take it away Cinema Drunkie!
So March 25, 2020 was the 4 year anniversary of the most divisive superhero movie of all time, Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Released to an enormous box office intake but a negative critical reception, it started a furious debate between fans that still rages on till this day: Is it a terrible movie, or is it a masterpiece?? Wondering what side I’m on? Take a wild guess:
Yep. I love the masterpiece that is BvS.
And one of the many things I love about this movie is its awesome action sequences. The batmobile chase, the trinity against Doomsday, and of course, the now legendary warehouse fight. And I know with a column like this, that would be the one most folks would expect to be the topic. But not today. Oh no, I’m here to talk about the showdown between the Son of Krypton and the Bat of Gotham. Black vs blue. Day vs Night. God vs Man.
This is such a magnificent fight scene. Zack Snyder really outdid himself on this one. The way he visualizes these 2 titans of comic books clashing (you mean a… Clash of the Titans? BADUM TSSSS!) is nothing short of breathtakingly beautiful. And the way each combatant gets equal time pummeling each other is also well handled.
I also like how the fight reflects where the 2 men are at this point in the story. Superman at first tries to reason with Batman, who’s suffering from a complete homicidal breakdown (check the smirk on Batman’s face when the sonic emitters overcome Superman. When have you ever known Batman to take pleasure in the pain of others? The man’s almost completely lost it), but when Batman refuses to listen to reason, Superman says to hell with this, and begins to rattle the dark knight.
But then Batman brings out his secret weapon: Kryptonite gas, which severely weakens Superman and briefly strips him of his powers. And that’s when Batman goes for the jugular. He decimates Superman with his vastly superior fighting skills. Superman seems all but done, until he begins to feel his powers slowly come back (my favorite part of the fight). Superman catches a roundhouse kick and says Batman flying through the wall and…
Wait a minute… Why am I giving you all a play by play when I’m just gonna share the fight scene anyway? I don’t know. I make no sense sometimes. But I just love this scene so much. It’s so incredible. Everything about it… including the “Martha” moment. Yep. I said that, and I meant that.
But, without further ado, may I present to you… Batman vs Superman.
Oh, and one more thing… #ReleaseTheSnyderCut
