Well, Paramount and Hasbro have found their Snake Eyes in Henry Golding and now they have found his Arashakagi Blood Brother Storm Shadow as The Wrap is bringing word that Andrew Koji, who is the star of Cinemax’s WARRIOR, will play the iconic white clad ninja in the SNAKE-EYES spin-off film that is being developed!
Here’s some history on both iconic ninjas!
Storm Shadow, like Snake Eyes, was created by Marvel Comics writer-editor Larry Hama. He debuted in 1984 on the pages of Marvel’s “G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero” comic series, before appearing that same year in the second “G.I. Joe” animated miniseries produced by Sunbow Entertainment. As depicted in the comics, Storm Shadow is a Japanese-American special forces soldier and member of the fictional Arashikage ninja clan, who was once friends with Snake Eyes before becoming his bitter enemy. The two eventually end up on opposite sides of the conflict between G.I. Joe and the terrorist organization COBRA.
Snake Eyes is the ninja commando known for his deadly ability with a sword and trench knives. However, he is also a highly skilled martial artist who can be just as dangerous unarmed. Snake-Eyes was living in solitude in the High Sierras when he was recruited to join G.I. Joe. His real name and backstory have long been sources of mystery. As a result of being caught in a helicopter explosion, he is heavily scarred and mute. To hide his face, he usually appears in a black balaclava and matching bodysuit.
Koji gain prominence earlier this year when he starred in Cinemax’s breakout martial arts epic series Warrior which gained favorable reviews from critics and fans alike and now he has won the coveted role of the elite ninja warrior.
The Hashtag Show unveiled a supposed synopsis for Snake Eyes:
“The spin-off prequel will follow a younger ‘Snake Eyes’ “as a street fighter in Peru. Driven by the desire to avenge the death of his father, Snake Eyes is apparently a man on the move until he ends up in Japan, where he and his best friend, Tommy, aka Storm Shadow, will begin their training with the Arashikage Clan. The film will see at least 3 of the clan’s legendary masters as they train Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow as Hard Master, Soft Master and Blind Master are all set to appear. Also present at the Arashikage compound is the film’s female lead, Akita. In comic continuity, Junko Akita was an apprentice and lover of Storm Shadow; here she is the head of security and will be a love interest for Snake Eyes.
Of course if it’s a GI Joe movie, Cobra must somehow be present and in this instance their presence is made manifest in what appears to be a character created for the film: Kenta. Kenta is revealed to Storm Shadow’s brother who has long since left his family, the Arashikage, and joined with a rival ninja clan, the Kurayami. It is Kenta who attempts to lure Snake Eyes away from the Arashikage and into a terrorist plot being devised by Cobra. We won’t delve too deeply into spoiler territory here, but we can see what side of things Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow will take and this film certainly seems to set the stage for one of the great comic book rivalries.”
Stunt coordinator Kimani Ray Smith, who just recently choreographed the awesome action in Netflix’s WU ASSASSINS, will be handling the action set pieces in this one as well so expect some serious damage when it comes to the on screen fisticuffs!
The GI JOE: SNAKE EYES spin-off will be helmed by Robert Schwentke (RED, R.I.P.D.) from a screenplay by Evan Spiliotopoulous (Bright 2, The Huntsman: Winter’s War).
To know me is to know that I have been a JOE fan, and especially a Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow fan, since I was like 7 so I couldn’t be any more happier and excited about this spin-off. It was revealed that Paramount is assembling an ensemble GI JOE film as well and hopefully both Golding and Koji can be a part of that film as well.
Snake-Eyes is set to start production later this year and is eyeing a October 16th, 2020 release in theaters. In the meantime while we wait for even more details check out Ray Park and Byung Hun-Lee as Snake and Storm Shadow respectively from both GI JOE: THE RISE OF COBRA and GI JOE: RETALIATION!
