ROUND ONE: CHUN-LI TAKES ON THE MULTIVERSE
Forget the arcade cabinet — this fight just broke out of the Street Fighter universe entirely. A new live-action fan film, Chun-Li vs Everybody, has landed on YouTube, pitting the iconic fighter against a gauntlet of pop culture heavyweights in one of the most ambitious no-budget action productions to hit the internet this year.

One Weekend. Zero Budget. Maximum Chaos.
Directed by Maltese-Australian filmmaker Matthew C. Vella, Chun-Li vs Everybody was shot entirely over a single weekend in 2023 — with no budget to speak of. What the production lacked in funding, it made up for in sheer ambition, throwing Chun-Li into back-to-back battles against Ryu and Ken from Street Fighter, Scorpion from Mortal Kombat, Spider-Man, Batman, Darth Vader, and more. It’s a crossover brawl that fan-film fans have been dreaming about for years, finally brought to life by a team working purely on passion.
Maria Tran Steps Into the World Warrior’s Shoes
Leading the charge as Chun-Li is Vietnamese-Australian actress and martial artist Maria Tran, known for her work on Last King of the Cross, Fat Pizza: Back in Business, and Jackie Chan’s Bleeding Steel. Tran isn’t just a hired fighter for this project — she’s a filmmaker in her own right, serving as the creative force behind the independent action franchise Echo 8. She directed, produced, and starred in the original film, as well as its follow-ups, Five By Five and Echo 8 Beyond. Her hands-on action pedigree is all over the screen in Chun-Li vs Everybody, bringing authenticity to every strike and takedown.

A Villain’s Costume with Real Movie History
Rounding out the cast is a crew of supporting actors, influencers, and cosplayers who bring the fan-favorite characters to life. Among them, Ian Thompson suits up as Darth Vader — and not in just any costume. Thompson dons a Vader suit originally created for the 1983 premiere of Return of the Jedi, adding a genuine piece of cinema history to the fight.
Fifty-Plus VFX Shots, Zero Dollars
The choreography is elaborate, fast, and unrelenting, but the real jaw-dropper is what happens in post-production. VFX artist Jake Dobbie delivered more than 50 visual effects shots for the film — an enormous achievement for a project with no budget at all. From energy blasts to lightsaber glow, the effects work punches well above its weight class.
What’s Next for Matthew C. Vella
Chun-Li vs Everybody is far from Vella’s only project in motion. He’s also co-writer and producer of the upcoming Australian feature film The Undesirables, and writer-director of Nannu, an upcoming Maltese-Australian short-film co-production filmed across both countries. Between the fan-film world and these larger productions, Vella is quickly building a reputation as a filmmaker who can do a lot with a little — and even more with a lot.
Chun-Li vs Everybody was produced independently as a non-commercial fan project and is available to watch for free on YouTube.
