Rounding out my coverage of yesterday’s D23 fan event, Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm have unveiled epic and bombastic new trailers for VisionQuest and Ahsoka Season 2 respectively. While Marvel’s newest offering features a trippy return for Paul Bettany and James Spader, Ahsoka looks to bring plenty of lightsaber duels and epic space battles for a ramped up new season. VISIONQUEST
After regaining his memories from the hex-born Vision, White Vision flew off in search of his purpose. All is well for Vision as he goes into hiding to live a quiet life. However, the tranquil silence is shattered when a bounty is placed on his head. As physical, personified manifestations of past AI systems and programs created by Tony Stark pursue him, Vision partners with Ultron (James Spader) to escape their grasp and finally take control of his life.
VisionQuest features a stacked cast including returning fan favorite Paul Bettany as White Vision/Vision, and the always game James Spader as Ultron, Additional cast includes Ruaridh Mollica as Tommy Maximoff/Speed, James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., and T’Nia Miller as Jocasta.
TRAILER TACTICAL REACTION: Hailed as the last of the genre bending trilogy which included Wanda Vision and Agatha All Along, VisionQuest looks to showcase Bettany’s forlorn AI character in a trippy, noirish adventure that beats to a different drum. Adding Spader who I feel no one would ever reprise his role of Ultron, and we have a buddy action trope style look with Spader even taking human form for a different effect and the chemistry between the two looks spotless. It looks just as far out as Wanda Vision but also seems to contain some stylish action set pieces. My hopes are that it doesn’t go too far off the beat and path and actually brings something vibey and different to the MCU while enhancing the universe. We shall see.

AHSOKA Season 2
Season 2 continues the story of Ahsoka Tano and her extraordinary journey beyond the known galaxy. As Ahsoka and her Jedi apprentice Sabine Wren travel across a mysterious and perilous world to find their way home, their friends Hera, Ezra, Zeb, and Chopper must face the powerful Grand Admiral Thrawn and his sinister allies, who seek to plunge the New Republic into war.
Rosario Dawson is back as Ahsoka and she stars alongside Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Lars Mikkelsen, Eman Esfandi, and Ivanna Sakhno who all return from season 1. Fan favorite Hayden Christensen is also back as the iconic Anakin Skywalker, and his Force ghost looks to set Ahsoka on a path of redemption and formulating on whether she is a Jedi or not. Noticeably absent is the late, great Ray Stevenson as Baylan Skoll as he sadly passed away before season 1 premiered. He is replaced by Rory McCann who has a big lightsaber to fill.
TRAILER TACTCIAL REACTION: While the first season was a mixed bag in terms of enjoyment, season 2 looks to fix issues while delivering that epic Star Wars retro vibe. We see plenty of space battles, Storm troopers falling from blaster shots and a new introduction of one bad ass looking light saber which is always a plus. When I saw it unleashed in the trailer, I got Darth maul vibes when the doors opened with him standing there as he deployed the double-edged lightsaber. Seeing Christenson back as Anakin is always a chef’s kiss and his interactions with Ahsoka look weighty and emotional. Dawson rocks this character and whatever you say about the overall product, she is the best thing about it. Stevenson will be missed and it will be bittersweet to see someone else take over but the trailer enforces a fandom for Star Wars that has been missing. Let’s hope it delivers on what this trailer promises.
