Over thirty-three years in the making, it would appear that the action spec for a film called Maelstrom is finally going to see the light of day. Once sold to Warner Bros. in 1993 by famed producer Jeff Robinov when he was an agent, the action-thriller’s status is now active, and Netflix is looking to board hot action star Alan Ritchson for the lead with Carry-On director Jaume Collet-Serra set to helm.
According to Variety who dropped the morsel of news yesterday, “the film follows a Federal Marshall guarding the fiancée of an arms dealer seeking witness protection. Events unfold over the course of one evening as a hurricane rolls in, blocking outside communication and preventing reinforcements from arriving. Together they must fight to survive the onslaught of men working for the arms dealer, as well as the escalating elements of the natural disaster raging outside.”
Ritchson is currently in talks to play the Federal Marshall of course and right now he is the hottest star in action with his recurring role in the hit Prime Video series Reacher. Ritchson also has several action films in the pipeline with the 70’s set brooding action flick Motor City hitting this August, Runner debuting in September which he stars with Owen Wilson and a new Christmas themed action pic where he will star alongside none other than Arnold Schwarzeneggar as Old Saint Nick. That film is called The Man with the Bag and is set to warm audiences this holiday season on December 2nd. The fourth season of Reacher is also poised and ready to hit Prime on August 12th, so it is very good to be an Alan Ritchson fan right now.
Ritchson and Netflix have a great working relationship as the star was featured in the streaming service’s hit sci-fi actioner War Machine. Late writer Gregory Fitzpatrick wrote the initial draft for Maelstrom and Mark Bianculli (How to Rob a Bank) has been enlisted to touch up the script and modernize it for today. Maelstrom will be the first film in a lucrative deal between Netflix and Robinov’s Talking Pictures production banner.
