Is anyone out there as old as I am and can remember back in the day when there was no internet and we essentially had to go see every movie in hopes of seeing the trailer for another movie. Then they started putting trailers at the beginning of VHS issues which was essentially like going to the theater at home with a round of coming soons before the actual movie leaped onto your small screen. Don’t get me stated in the fact that we essentially got just one trailer for a movie, even a blockbuster, so we had basically two minutes’ worth of footage to tide us over until we actually sat our butts in theater seats to watch the film and was genuinely surprised because with only having the one teaser, we didn’t see the whole film before it came out. I digress however…
Nowadays, we get four trailers for one film which shows off everything and spoils just about every minute of the anticipated pic and we even get teasers for trailers. That’s right! We get a teaser announcing the fact that the trailer is coming! The internet and social media have without a doubt destroyed the mystery and the surprises for fans with the deluge of promotion for a movie that is seen before it can be seen. Is that even a thing? Once again, I digress…
Well, stand back everyone because we have something even better than a teaser trailer for a trailer. We have new Hollywood A lister and superstar Glen Powell announcing in a 9 second hype video that the trailer for The Running Man, which hails from director Edgar Wright, debuts tomorrow! Complete with bombastic explosion!
This is a new vision for King’s short story which was bombastically brought to life in a different form in the sci-fi actioner back in the 80’s that starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime. I’m pretty sure that this interpretation will be different, so I am eager to see what they do with this one as I am a huge fan of Arnie’s film which did see it’s fair share of behind-the-scenes turmoil.
With that, I give you the 9 second hype video with Glen Powell! Enjoy!!!!
WOW! That was awesome! If I wasn’t psyched before, I definitely am now. What could be better than Powell looking all action cinema hero worthy spouting the words “the trailer for The Running Man drops tomorrow!” If that wasn’t enough to wet your action appetite, there is even a shot of the crew filming a huge explosion to fully get you stoked for this! Sign me up!
The actual plot for this version hasn’t really dropped yet but King’s book synopsis entailed, “It was the ultimate death game in a nightmare future America. The year is 2025 and reality TV has grown to the point where people are willing to wager their lives for a chance at a billion-dollar jackpot. Ben Richards is desperate – he needs money to treat his daughter’s illness. His last chance is entering a game show called The Running Man where the goal is to avoid capture by Hunters who are employed to kill him. Surviving this month-long chase is another issue when everyone else on the planet is watching – and willing to turn him in for the reward.”
The bare bones plot reads: “A man joins a game show where contestants, allowed to go anywhere in the world, are pursued by “hunters” hired to kill them.” So unlike Arnie’s film, this one looks to adapt King’s story more faithfully with the thought of going anywhere in the world so we shall see.
As much as I love Schwarzenegger’s film, the movie was in no way shape or form a direct interpretation of King’s story. It had the bare essentials, but they just stripped it all away for a routine bullet filled flick with creative kills and Arnie spouting off one liners. I did love it though as I stated.
In Wright’s new pic, Powell stars along with Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding) who also starred with Powell in Twisters, Daniel Ezra (the TV series All American), Lee Pace (Halt and Catch Fire), Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Emilia Jones (CODA), David Zayas (Dexter), Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead), Josh Brolin and William H. Macy. That’s a pretty stacked cast so that should fuel more excitement for fans craving to see this one.
Needless to say (but I will anyway) check back here tomorrow for the actual trailer which will probably be the first of many for this one! You’ve been warned!
