We still have a while to wait for the sequel to the Mortal Kombat reboot and to see if it approves on the original and has, like you know, an actual tournament in it but one improvement we have known for a while and that was teased at the end of the first film is in fact that Hollywood action star turned world savior Johnny Cage is on the way! Say what you will about the casting of Karl Urban (Dredd, The Boys) as the iconic video game fighter, but I feel it was a solid choice and cannot wait to see what he offers in the role which was previously played by Linden Ashby in the original 1994 film. Chris Conrad played him for like two minutes in the dreadful sequel so here’s hoping that Urban does Cage right.
To excite fans as we wait for the October 24th release date this fall, a new poster has been launched showcasing Urban in full throttle Cage mode. Now keep in mind, this is a poster for a fake film starring Johnny Cage called Uncaged Fury (brought to you by the makes of Rebel Without a Cage) so it’s not an actual Mortal Kombat poster but I love it and here’s hoping they made some faux trailers for Cage’s films. Check out Urban in all his Johnny Cage glory below!

Original franchise film director Simon McQuoid is returning to helm once again and plot details are being kept under lock and key for now. Jeremy Slater has penned the ambitious sequel and casting news is forthcoming. Slater is best known for writing the Disney Plus/Marvel Studios limited series event Moon Knight.
The original movie was released in 2022 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max while theaters were trying to recover from the pandemic and opened number one at the box office while ranking at the top of HBO Max’s most watched list which was truly a marvelous showing.
In the video game lore for Mortal Kombat, Johnny Cage is an action star in Hollywood who gets sucked into the iconic and infamous Mortal Kombat tournament in order to save the Earth Realm. It’s awesome to see that the filmmakers are keeping this important character trait to Cage, and this is evident with the fake key art for the also fake action movie Uncaged Fury. The slick key art shows off a video game accurate interpretation of Johnny and he’s even wearing his trademark sunglasses and a leather jacket while smirking as he stands in front of an explosion with bikers erupting out of it. Nice touch.
Like I stated, Mortal Kombat 2 as of now has a theater launch date of October 24th, so here’s hoping we get a trailer or even a teaser sooner than later. Warner Bros. could opt to wait till closer to the release date, but it is evident that the hype train is starting to roll as all the social media sites have been update with a shiny, sleek new logo for the sequel which you can see below.

Lewis Tan, who can be seen now in the Netflix series Cobra Kai, is set to return as the first film’s hero Cole and the rest of the original cast should be intact as well including Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), and Ludi Lin (Liu Kang). New cast additions include Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Grabrielle (Jade), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Desmond Chiam (King Jerrod), Ana Thu Nguyen (Queen Sindel), and Damon Herriman (Quan Chi).
I lobbied for WWE’s Mike “The Miz” Mizanin to take on the role of Johnny Cage when he was also lobbying for it (you can see my post here) as he would have been perfect and his in ring persona oozed Cage but the movie company wanted Urban and while I’m not opposed to this casting, I feel there were better but Urban is great and will probably knock it out of the park and this pseudo-poster is a nice start in convincing me.
