Never can get enough of a good thing and Lionsgate couldn’t agree more as they officially announced today that a third Den of Thieves film is now in development. To make the announcement sweeter, it is also highly likely that stars Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. will return as well given their winner take all chemistry on screen was the best thing about the second film which was a moderate success at the box office. The new installment has now hit streaming and is also racking up the views as well.
Butler will also be producing once again via his G-Base production banner along with his partner in crime Alan Siegel. At the time of writing, franchise director and writer Christian Gudegast hasn’t been confirmed to be returning as well but Lionsgate is in active negotiations to see him come back for the hat trick along with Butler and Jackson.
The second film, Den of Thieves: Pantera saw “Big Nick back and on the hunt on the mean streets of Europe, closing in on Donnie, who is embroiled in the dangerous world of diamond thieves and the infamous Panther mafia, as they plot a massive heist of the world’s biggest diamond exchange. The film was directed and written by Christian Gudegast, who also wrote and directed the first movie.”

Although the first movie was deemed a low rent Heat by many, I loved it for its stripped-down meanness and violent nature of the good guys who were just as bad as the bank robbers they were tailing. Even though the finale didn’t live up to the iconic street firefight of Michael Mann’s classic, it still packed a punch and was ferocious. I also thought that Butler’s Big Nick is one of the best anti-heroes seen in screen cinema for quite some time. His onscreen chemistry with Jackson for the second film bustled with a Riggs and Murtaugh vibe that was welcoming and just enough politically incorrect for these times.
My review for Pantera reiterated this as I thought that the sequel was the perfect “January barnburner for the cold weather. The European landscape, international flavor and thrilling heist action is the near perfect antidote for what ails ya. Butler and Jackson work great together and fill the sequel with the buddy comradery that will entice viewers to check this one out and the action, when it arrives, is blunt force trauma with a heavy dose of speed infused in. Filmmaker Christian Gudegast has managed to take the best elements of the original and rev it up with awesome performances from the two leads complete with a banging score that enhances the action and dramatics on the screen. This weekend saw the release of Donnie Yen’s The Prosecutor as well and coupled with this film, 2025 is staring off with a collective bang and boom. Big Nick is welcome back at any time.” Read my full review below!
