This is no trick and it certainly isn’t a treat as Variety is reporting that the planned pseudo sequel/reboot for Cliffhanger has lost Sylvester Stallone and director Ric Roman Waugh. The film is now a full blown reboot with Pierce Brosnan joining Lily James (Baby Driver) and Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-Stop) stepping into the director’s chair. The news comes with new BTS pics of James which you can view below.

The new synopsis including Brosnon reads “In this reboot of Cliffhanger, seasoned mountaineer Ray Cooper (Pierce Brosnan) and his daughter Sydney run a mountain chalet in the Dolomites. During a weekend trip with a billionaire’s son, they are targeted by a gang of kidnappers. Ray’s older daughter Naomi (Lily James), still haunted by a past climbing accident, witnesses the attack and escapes. To save her family, she must confront her fears and fight for survival in the Italian Dolomites.”
When Stallone was still attached to the project, his character of Ray would have been kidnapped along with a high profile client promoting his daughter to launch a rescue. I guess it’s fitting that Sly stepped away as he would have been the father in distress this time around.
I can’t say that I’m not disappointed to see Sly no longer involved but it is what it is. My interest has certainly lessened for this film and I was excited to see what Stallone would have brought in his return as Ray Breslin. Brosnan is no slouch for sure but it just won’t be the same. I could change my mind when I see footage but I’m not holding my breath.
Nell Tiger Free (The First Omen, Servant), Franz Rogowski (Passages, Great Freedom), Shubham Saraf (Shantaram and Criminal), Assaad Bouab (Franklin, Bad Sisters), Suzy Bemba (Poor Things, Homecoming) and Bruno Gouery (The White Lotus, Emily in Paris, Modi) round out the additional cast. Just like the Roadhouse reimagining, this cast does little to peek any sort of enthusiasm.
Filming is underway in Austria and no doubt, the cinematography will be breathtaking. We’ll just have to wait and see if the action and drama do anything as well.
