First of all, I have to apologize as when the first trailer for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire hit, I was in the middle of my personal issues. Thus, I never did a proper post for it but as a fan of both iconic monsters, I’m looking to rectify. A new trailer is coming this week and I fully intend to not only do a post but a reaction video as well. Godzilla VS Kong is clearly my favorite out of Warner Bros./Legendary Pictures Monsterverse franchise with this follow up looking to dethrone it.
While we wait for the new trailer, Empire has put out a new image of both Kings and with it some interesting details from returning director Adam Wingard in which he teases a Lethal Weapon, buddy cop vibe hitting in the follow up for our two reluctant partners in crime. We all know that the previous film had Godzilla and Kong at odds with each other which led to the ultimate clash of the Titans for most of the film, but they did team up at the end when Mecha Godzilla reared his ugly head.
Now in the new film, the two will reluctantly again be on the same side when a new threat from The Scar King surfaces and Wingard promises a lot to go on between the two titans.
“There’s a bit of a truce — Godzilla’s in control of the surface world and Kong is down in Hollow Earth. It wasn’t, ‘Okay, give me a call when something goes wrong, Kong. And I, Godzilla, will rush to the rescue!’ The buddy-cop dysfunctional relationship dynamic is probably the best one to describe Godzilla and Kong,” Wingard stated in the interview.
He went on to add the best part saying, “My influences are always embedded with the ‘80s, and the ‘80s were prime for [that] storyline. There’s a lot of misunderstanding – the way that the monsters communicate isn’t straightforward.”
Now if you ask me, our boy Godzilla is clearly the more reckless Riggs with Kong being the more subdued and rational Murtaugh. I wonder if there will be an exploding toilet scene in this one as well. There’s a new image of both Titans below that will surely whet your appetite for the new trailer and the movie itself when it hits theaters on March 29th. Check out the bad boys below courtesy of Empire! I’m totally digging Kong’s Six Million Dollar Ape arm BTW.

In terms of characters, most notably Kong, Wingard also gave us a sneak peek of what we can expect from arcs in the new film and how it relates to old school martial arts flicks. Don’t worry though, Godzilla will go through a lot of changes as well and why his pink glow is evident in this entry.
“There’s a personal journey that Kong’s going through. This is his version of a training routine. I’m really big into Shaw Brothers martial arts. Those films are always about, ‘Here’s a big threat, and you have to do all these things to pump yourself up so that you can take on that threat.’ You’re gonna see lots of different versions of Godzilla in this movie.”
In other words, our boys are going to be meaner and badder and I personally cannot wait to see the Kaiju chaos that will unfold in IMAX come March 29th. After all, just the shot of Godzilla and Kong charging side by side is enough to get my inner 9 year old screaming with enthusiasm.
We unfortunately didn’t get a Big Game spot for Godzilla x Kong which was a massive misfire if you ask me, but I’m told the new trailer will pop up this Wednesday. Until then, watch the first trailer I never put up below while we wait for the main event this week!
