Sadly, we all know that Cobra Kai is coming to an end with the sixth season that is currently filming as we speak. We probably would be watching it right now if it wasn’t for the actors strike last year but alas the new set of episodes were delayed like everything else, and we must wait till later in the year to see how this saga comes to an end. Cobra Kai came at the exact, right time and tapped into the nostalgia bones of all older fans while winning over a new generation at the same time. Star Ralph Maachio and William Zabka brought back the old magic along with the rest of the cast and returning fan favorites for one of the most popular series of all time.
Sony made us all happy last year when they announced a brand-new Karate Kid film that would combine both universes of the original films and Cobra Kai series along with the remake that starred Jackie Chan. Further making this project juicy to all fans is that both Maachio and Chan have signed up to star in the film and you just know that there will be more surprise announcements in the future. This movie will bridge both Karate Kid worlds together in one epic story that will definitely do the franchise justice.
Today, Sony Pictures has officially unveiled the newest Karate Kid and he is American born Chinese actor Ben Wang who starred in the Disney+ series American Born Chinese and he beat out 10,000 other applicants so that was a feat in itself. Now, his name isn’t exactly household right now but that will certainly change after this role. According to sources, EWang’s audition was top tier to say the least and he comes locked and loaded with an impressive resume which includes a fluent understanding of the Mandarin language to which he is fluent in. To go along with that, and this is the part that excites me, is the fact that he is trained in multiple disciplines of the martial arts including Karate, Wing Chun-Kung Fu, Gumdo, Kempo, and Taekwondo. Impressive, Most impressive. This means that Wang will be the first Karate Kid that will be heavily trained in the arts as Maachio and Jayden Smith, who starred in the remake, were not upon their hiring. Wang’s skill set will, without a doubt, bring a whole new level to the fight sequences in the new installment.
The plot details are top secret as of this moment, but we do know, per the report, that “the story to the East Coast and focus on a teen from China who finds strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor.” Something tells me that with both Chan and Maachio involved, this newest Karate Kid will have the benefit of not one but two masters. Jonathan Entwistle (I’m Not Okay With This and The End of the F***ing World) is set to helm the movie from a script penned by Rob Lieber. There is even a set release date for December 13th of this year but that could change at a moment’s notice.
