Tom Cruise is Hollywood personified. Love or hate the actor, there is no denying that he’s one of the last true stars of cinema. Over the years, Cruise has reinvented himself as a top tier action star as well with his turn as Ethan Hunt in the Mission:Impossible blockbuster franchise as well as Top Gun and more. Cruise has risked life and limb for the art in most cases doing his own stunts, injuring himself to the point that production has to shut down and also yelling as crew members for not wearing masks during the pandemic.
With all that said, it’s time for Cruise to make a full on, violent and “Gnarly” R rated flick after so many PG-13 affairs. After all, one of his best performances is in the R rated thriller Collateral where he played a lethal assassin opposite Jamie Foxx. I love that they use the word “gnarly” as that could mean so many splendid things. Collateral was one hell of a pulse pounding thriller so I’m thinking that maybe the new movie be an amped up version of that one. Fingers crossed. Personally, I’d love to see Tom rock a spec ops war thriller where he jocks up to take out some insurgents.
After Mission: Impossible- Dead Reckoning Part II is final, Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have announced that they plan to make more gritty and brutal films. They evidently have been planning this for a few years with McQuarries stating in 2020 to Empire that
“It’s a very un-Tom character, and we have plans for an even more un-Tom character that we’ve been talking about, which I’m hopeful about in the future,”
McQuarrie has given us an update on the project stating “There’s a movie that Cruise and I are talking about doing next or in some probable next, that Erik [Jendresen, writer] and I developed together – what has been referred to on the internet as ‘The Gnarly Movie’.” He went on to say, “It’s that movie that they’re all asking for, and that we want to do.”

The two will They will start work on the mystery R rated flick after they finish Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.
McQuarrie also mentioned making an R-rated Reacher movie had the franchise continued. A move that I would have totally been on board for! I’m a fan of Cruise as Reacher even though he didn’t fit the profile that the author had intended.
“Tom and I were talking about, had the series continued, to take Reacher to a place where, in the post-Deadpool, post-Joker world, Reacher could have been an R-rated movie and an R-rated franchise and really fed into the brutality of those books. We were fully ready to lean into that.”
Color me intrigued. I love this idea and here’s hoping it’s a full on action pic with Cruise unleashed doing some rad stunt work. Will it contain firepower? Fisticuffs? Both?! We can only speculate at this point so you know what to do!
