It is now 11: 15 PM on Saturday, February 13th and before I drift off to sleep, I just wanted to take a moment to wish a very happy birthday to one of the most exciting action stars working in the genre today. His birthday was yesterday so it’s belated but better late than never. Indonesian powerhouse Iko Uwais first exploded onto the scene in 2009’s brutally choreographed action film Merantau and ever sice then he has continued to WOW fans across the globe with his breathtaking display of Penkat Silat in such classic movies as The Raid, The Raid 2, Triple Threat and most recently The Night Comes for Us and Netflix’s thrilling series Wu Warriors.
Uwais is a special kind of talent and he never ceases to amaze me with his skills that literally make your jaw drop and with fluid movement like water, he serves up a ballet of brutality and bone crunching excellence.
It has become a tradition here at Action-Flix.com to highlight a classic fight scene from the birthday person of the hour and when it comes to a talent like Uwais, you have a vast treasure trove of battle hardened sequences to choose from. Normally, one would highlight a scen from The Raid films but I like to always share a scen that normally would not be chosen.
With that, I give you the wince inducing finale from Headshot where Uwais takes on Sunny Pang in an extended display of sheer violent bliss as two men engage in such fierce combat that it will leave one man dead on the floor and the other forever changed for the rest of his existence. This is the kind of sequence where where there are no winners but just a survivor who managed to achieve the upper hand at the right time.
Both Uwais and Pang are evenly matched here and with the outcome never really assured until it happens, the fight grips you from the beginning and only lets you come up for air when all is said and done.
Happy Birthday Iko and here’s to many more years of delivering unarmed comative brilliance that will definitely entertain genre fans on many a night. Good night….
P.S. Iko also just happens to be the next guest on Scott Adkins’ The Art Of Action which premieres next Tuesday. Check out the teaser trailer below!
