Once again to know me is to know that I have been a Star Wars fan since I basically was born as I saw A New Hope when I was four years old on premiere weekend back in 1977. My love for the greatest Sci-Fi story ever told only grew with each movie and we all know that one of the greatest characters from the saga was first introduced in 1980’s The Empire Strikes Back when Hollywood legend Billy Dee Williams was first seen as the iconic Lando Calrissian.

Fast forward to today at the 2019 NYCC and I was able to spend some time with Billy Dee as he held a Q&A Panel where he talked about his life and career which of course included A Galaxy Far Far Away…

Williams, even at 82 years young, was just as dapper as always and smooth as the day he first came into the spotlight. Some of the highlights of the panel included Billy talking about being from New York and only paying 150 dollars a month for a studio apartment in NYC. He was asked the usual questions about Star Wars and even made it clear that there was only one Lando when a fan asked him about what he thought of Donald Glover’s portrayal of the iconic character in Solo: A Star Wars story. He graciously said that Donald was a fine actor but he was the legit version.

Billy also talked about the artwork that he has done which can be seen on his official website BillyDeeWilliams.com and also about the music that influenced his life.

One funny story happened when a fan asked him if he kept anything from any of the Star Wars sets and hilariously Williams answered that he has an Ewok head that he asked George Lucas if he could have.

It was a surreal experience to be only three rows back as I never thought I would see any actors from the films live and now because of the NYCC, I have seen two including Mark Hamill who my wife and I saw two years ago during my first trip to the Con.

One sad note is that Williams mentioned that his time in acting has probably reached a conclusion and if it has, I think it would be fitting to have him as Lando one more time in The Rise Of Skywalker be the perfect way to end a stellar career.

Thank you Billy Dee for all the great memories from a true Star Wars fan….
