This wasn’t a guarantee, but it isn’t really a surprise either as a sequel to filmmaker Luke Sparke’s sleeper hit of 2025 Primitive War is official in development. Variety brought the confirmation on Thursday thus confirming we will get a franchise as the military themed/dinosaur hybrid actioner is in the works.
According to the official announcement, “Luke Sparke is returning to write, direct and produce the sequel through his Sparke Films. He also served as the editor, production designer and VFX supervisor on last year’s first film. The franchise is based on Ethan Pettus’ book series.”
Sparke is clearly one of the most defining indie filmmakers working today and his first Primitive War film was a polished and sleek looking movie that looked like a big studio film with jaw dropping visual effects, breakneck action set pieces and fierce character driven drama.
“The first film was about discovery,” Sparke said in the article. “This is about escalation — what happens when control is lost, when nature adapts faster than military doctrine and when the war itself becomes secondary to what’s been unleashed.”
The report also says that Primitive War 2 is in the lates stages of development which Sparke had mentioned in my exclusive chat with him when the first one hit theaters back in August of last year. Sparke had mentioned that a script was already in the can and he was just waiting on the word to hopefully proceed and that day has come.
I had read a few of the books that the movie is based on and it’s no secret that the first movie was one of my favorite action flicks of the year as it made it to number ten on my best of list. Check out what I had to say below!
If you’re a fan of the Jurassic Park/Jurassic World franchise but thought that they played it a little too safe, then Primitive War is the end all be all cure! From filmmaker Luke Sparke of the Occupation films comes a bombastic Vietnam era actioner fused with dinosaur carnage in one gory, bullet shredding thrill ride that delivers on all levels. I was never much of a fan of the Jurassic films except for Spielberg’s initial classic as I love dinosaur/kaiju films but I though they always played it safe to entice families to go see them. Of course, that makes sound business sense because after all, companies want to make money, but Sparke threw caution to the wind, or jungle as the case may be, and he delivered on all fronts with a military action-dinosaur crunching epic that was a relentless barrage of blood, explosions and dinos ripping unfortunate humans to shreds.
This movie is locked and loaded with some of the most amazing visuals and action available and fans will have to strap in because just like the advertising has mentioned, this ain’t going to be no walk in the park. It’s important to note that this is a pure indie film as Sparke financed it himself. There is no Disney money here. Just a cast and crew that poured their blood, sweat and tears into a project that when finished, rivaled anything a big studio could do. Per Action-Flix.com
Primitive War is being fast tracked to hopefully hit theaters next year. Sparke’s Queensland-based crew and producers Carmel Imrie, Carly Sparke, executive producer Geoff Imrie and co-producer Alex Becconsall are all returning as well. Carmel and Geoff Imrie are producing the sequel per their Let It Be Entertainment production banner.
