It’s been quiet on the western front when it comes to the Extraction spinoff series from Netflix titled Mercenary: An Extraction Series. Word came down months ago that Omar Sy (John Woo’s The Killer remake) would join the universe that is headed by Chris Hemsworth in two hit feature films and now we have our first look at Sy battle ready in a new image below!
The anticipated spin-off series starring Sy is currently still in production and just recently wrapped principal photography and is now currently in production in Morocco. The synopsis for the show details “a mercenary (Omar Sy) who embarks on a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting deep emotional wounds. The series explores the trauma, betrayal, and moral conflicts of characters pushed to the edge.
Deadline launched intel on the series back in February. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) is serving as the executive producer and showrunner for the new series which will encompass eight-episodes. The show will be executive produced by Joe Russo and Anthony Russo’s AGBO, which produced the two movies with Hemsworth.
“Audiences are in for a thrill as we delve deeper into the Extraction universe,” Peter Friedlander, VP Scripted Series at Netflix stated. “With Omar Sy leading the charge, our collaboration with the Russos, alongside Glen Mazzara, fans can expect even more of the high-octane adventures they love from the Extraction franchise.”
It is important to note that Hemsworth is still expected to headline a third entry in the popular franchise of movies and Idris Elba was even teased in the second movie as a recurring character. The Extraction movies, and hopefully series, are a hyper-kinetic barrage of thunderous action sequences encompassing some of the most bad ass stunt work ever seen in action cinema. The creative action design of the set pieces along with Sam Hargrave’s direction have made the movies a favorite amongst fans so hopefully the expansion of the universe will go off with a bang.
It is also important to note that international action sensation Don Lee (The Round Up Franchise) who has been delivering for Netflix for a few years now is also set to headline another Extraction spin-off film which is titled Extraction: TYGO. Lee is a powerhouse force to be reckoned with in action cinema here and overseas in his native Korea and will definitely bring the heat as well. Netflix says that Lee will bring a distinctive Korean action style flavor to the Extraction universe and it looks like the streaming service is making good on this franchise.
