Daredevil: Born Again is finally hitting Disney+ after a long wait and as we all wait to see Jon Bernthal return as Frank Castle AKA The Punisher (yes, I know he doesn’t show up till towards the end), fans of the gun toting vigilante from Marvel Comics are still reveling in the fact that they have announced that Bernthal will return as Frank for a dark and foreboding one shot MCU special in the likes of Werewolf By Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Christmas. These specials are keen to one shot stories in the comics that serve as standalone adventures for some of the best superhero action.
Marvel Studios and Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum made the announcement on the eve of the two-episode premiere of Daredevil: Born Again and Punisher fans lost their collective shit. I being one them. Winderbaum promises a story deserving of the character and it will indeed be dark.
“It’s like a shotgun blast of a story but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story,” Winderbaum stated.
He also added that the story will be “exciting” and praised Bernthal in the role. “He knows the character inside and out…. The idea that he’s in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever.”
While at the SXSW Film Festival to help promote The Accountant 2 which he is starring in along with Ben Affleck, Bernthal reiterated Winderbaum’s remarks while on the red carpet.
“I’m really grateful that I’m getting the opportunity to tell the story that I think the fans deserve. It’s not going to be easy; it’s not going to be light, and I think it’s the version that this character deserves and I’m just beyond honored.”
I was sold before but yes now I am invested. Hopefully the success of Daredevil; Born Again and the hopeful success of the one shot special will lead to more seasons for Bernthal tacking up with the signature skull on his chest. In the meantime, we wait to see Bernthal’s appearance in Daredevil and hopefully they let Frank cook.
