UPDATE! New details have emerged for the exciting announcement yesterday of Jon Bernthal headlining a Punisher MCU special. According to Entertainment Weekly, the highly anticipated Punisher special will be helmed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and he is also working on the script along with Bernthal. The two previously collaborated together on the HBO miniseries We Own This City which debuted in 2022.
In the update, Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum teased the story for the fans. “It’s like a shotgun blast of a story but also has all the pathos and emotion that you want out of a Frank Castle story. It’s so exciting.”Winderbaum added: “Bernthal is a generational actor. He’s incredible what he brings to all the roles he plays, but particularly Frank Castle. And he’s a great writer. He knows the character inside and out…Also, I love Punisher, but I love Jon’s Punisher in particular. The idea that he’s in the MCU and can bring that to the greater universe, especially the more grounded street-level stuff, is a huge opportunity and, as a fan, the greatest thing ever.”

Original Post: It’s a start but hopefully this will lead to bigger and badder things. Apparently, Marvel Studios is working on a Marvel standalone special set to star Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle/The Punisher. Bernthal is also set to return in the new Daredevil: Born Again series but how much screentime he gets is not known but it is clear that he will have a massive impact on the season. Bernthal first played the iconic vigilante on season two of Daredevil before getting his own series which lasted two seasons before Netflix infamously pulled all the Marvel shows when Disney+ became a reality. Hopefully this will lead to Bernthal reprising Castle for his own series again if all goes well.
There have been two Mavel studios special thus far including the lesser-known Werewolf by Night, which hit the streamer in October of 2022. Then came The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which came out roughly a month later during the holiday season. These specials are self-contained adventures featuring Mavel properties so adding The Punisher is a great way to keep Bernthal wearing the skull for now.
Marvel’s Brad Winderbaum made the announcement that a Punisher special is in the works and talked about it in a recent interview with ComicBook.
“That’s a character that’s very personal to Jon. He made that character an icon. He is, you know — I think I can say he’s working on a Special Presentation with us right now about that character. That character is driven by a lot of pain and a need to kind of get vengeance and justice, but it’s always interesting where his philosophy lands on how he deals out that justice. To me, that’s the most interesting part of Punisher, how he justifies the violence he inflicts.”
For now, Punisher and Daredevil fans alike await the season premiere of Daredevil: Born Again on March 4th and here’s hoping all The Defenders are able to make comebacks on Disney+ as there is talk of Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist all returning to the MCU as well.
