This year will see Dave Bautista suiting up for a new fantasy actioner along with Milla Jovovich in Paul W.S. Anderson’s In the Lost Lands where he plays a brooding bounty hunter, but the Guardians of the Galaxy alum is continuing with the dystopian sci-fi vibe as he has been tapped to headline a new thriller called Dreadnaught. The film will reunite Bautista with his Bushwick directors Cary Murnion and Jonathan Milott and it looks like Dave is going to battle some nasty aliens once again.
The film centers on “Max (Bautista), whose world was devastated when an alien species crash-landed on Earth, unleashing a deadly plague that claimed his wife and much of humanity. In the fragile society that remains, humans have learned to coexist with their extraterrestrial invaders. But for Max, survival isn’t enough.”
The tagline goes on to add, “His older daughter, Greta, is dying from the disease. As her body weakens, an alien Sentinel lurks outside their home, drawing nearer and nearer as Greta takes her final breaths. This silent, unyielding predator is on a mission to collect her body to fulfill an unstoppable metamorphosis ritual. The government sanctions it. Society accepts it. But Max refuses to have anything else taken from him.“
The film sounds more cerebral than full blown sci-fi action spectacle and if you know Bushwick which also starred Bautista then the directors are known for more human emotion than outright action set pieces. I liked Bushwick for what it was and even though it was advertised as more of a traditional military coup action-thriller, it turned out to be a real downer with an unsatisfying finale. Bautista’s character was especially done ugly in it so I’m skeptical with this one but you never know until you see it.
Dreadnaught‘s producers are Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee via their Thunder Road production banner which is responsible for the John Wick franchise. Jason Ross Jallet, Andrew Bronfman, and Jonathan Bronfman from Beyond the Frame (Bride Hard) will produce as well along with Bautista and Ashley Daniels of Dogbone Entertainment (Trap House). Noah Segal of Elevation Pictures (Infinity Pool) will serve as executive producer, with Marz VFX (The Creator) handling the visual effects.
Bautista mentioned that he wanted to try different kinds of roles and even trimmed his massive physique down in order to do so we will just have to wait and see how this goes with his career. I applaud him for wanting more than just explosions and stunts so hopefully Dreadnaught will bring a little of that along with the heavy-handed human drama.
