Marred in production hell and a victim of the writers and actors strike coupled with a change in leadership at Netflix, Charlize Theron’s sequel The Old Guard 2 will finally hit the streaming service this summer. The fantasy actioner sees Theron returning as an immortal soldier fighting a centuries old war along with her unit of equally immortal warriors. To celebrate the news of the release, Netflix has also unveiled a new behind the scenes video of the follow up which showcases some new footage along with the making of the anticipated sequel. View it below!
A new synopsis has also been revealed and reads as follows: “Andy and her team of immortal warriors return to protect humanity from a formidable new enemy who threatens their existence. Fans will recall that The Old Guard ended on an unresolved note. After Booker (Schoenaerts) betrays the group, he gets exiled for a century — only to find the long-lost Quynh (Ngô) lurking in his apartment. What does she want? Only one thing’s for certain — the action will be bigger and bolder than ever, and the film will take you to places you’ve never seen before.”
The Old Guard 2 also stars returning cast members KiKi Layne as Nile, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, Luca Marinelli as Nicky, Veronica Ngo as Quynh, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Copley. New additions for the sequel include Uma Thurman (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) and Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, Snake Eyes: GI Joe Origins). Victoria Mahoney takes over directing duties from Gina Prince-Bythewood who still produced the sequel and Greg Rucka, who created the graphic novel along with artist Leandro Fernandez that these films are based on, returned to write the script along with Sarah L. Walker.
The first movie was solid, and the action set pieces delivered along with a Raid style finale that was filled with some ferocious action design. Theron was in complete control and dominated the film with her cast. Read my initial review of the first film below where I said that the movie was a “Much Needed Shot of Adrenalized Action for Summer Movie Viewing!”
