Kevin Feige wants and needs to right the ship. After Avengers: Endgame, the MCU has been in a state of flux after suffering its worst failures to date including The Marvels. Now it’s important to note that many studios and filmmakers will gladly take Marvel failures as the studio is on another level, but Feige knows that superhero exhaustion is upon us, and he needs to fix it so Marvel Studios and Disney can see the same box office numbers that they have enjoyed for over a decade.
How do you right the ship? Well, you get the brother directing tandem that helmed two of your biggest successes, that’s how. The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joseph, have helmed four of the biggest MCU films, and two of them were colossal hits in Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. That’s right, Marvel is looking at the dynamic duo to bring it all back in and they will probably do whatever it takes to do it.
It looks like next week’s opening of Deadpool & Wolverine will be what the studio is looking for, but Feige is already looking to the future because he wants the momentum to continue after this juggernaut leaves the cinemas and that includes The Russo Brothers in talks to direct the next two Avengers films. The fifth and sixth Avengers films are also in a state of flux after star Jonothan Majors, who played Kang and was supposed to be the new villain in the fifth film, was accused and found guilty of assault and harassment in December so they cut ties with him. The problem is that the next movie was to be called Avengers: The Kang Dynasty but now it will have to shift gears after Majors’ firing. The sixth film was to be Avengers: Secret Wars which takes its cues from the bestselling comic series.

That is still in play as The Russos want to adapt that storyline which hails from the 1980s comic book series which showcased Marvel’s mightiest heroes going up against the biggest of villains in antagonists in the Beyonder. Marvels’ heroes and villains waged war on a distant planet called Battleworld and in 2015, the story continued where all the multiverses were destroyed and only a few scavengers remained who were marooned on one lone planet which ruled with an iron hand by Doctor Doom.
There have also been multiple reports and rumors circulating that suggest that Ms. Marvel AKA Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan) and Hawkeye protege Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop) are going to lead a newer and younger version of The Avengers which was teased in a stinger sequence during The Marvels. These are just reports and rumors of course as nothing has been confirmed by any legit source. Just like Nick Fury did in the original phase, Kamala is suggested as taking on the role of assembling a new team young heroes to save the world. This could all be a moot point however as the MCU is switching gears and everything is still in limbo.
The Russos will most likely take the gig as Disney will waive a blank check in front of them, but I feel that the creative brother team wants to showcase their vision of these stories to the world. It’s important to note that the release dates for the next two Avengers films are still active with the fifth Avengers film set for a May 1, 2026, release, while Secret Wars is supposed to land on May 7, 2027.
