Dave Bautista is going from a bad day to a great day to an even worse day in his upcoming action-comedy package being sold at Cannes which sees Lionsgate acquiring worldwide rights. To make the film sound even better is the fact that veteran martial arts whiz, action coordinator and newly appointed director JJ Perry is set to helm after making a grand directorial debut with Netflix’s Day Shift which premiered last summer.
Titled The Killer’s Game and based on Jay Bonansinga’s novel of the same name it tells the story of “veteran assassin Joe Flood (Bautista), who is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and authorizes a kill on himself to avoid the pain that is destined to follow. After ordering the kill, he finds out that he was misdiagnosed and must then fend off the army of former colleagues trying to kill him.” I find you he was going from bad to good to worse.
Rand Ravich and Simon Kinberg (the X-Men movies) scripted the movie which will see sales begin at the Cannes Film Festival market that gets underway tomorrow.
Perry has been crushing it as an action director and fight coordinator for years as well as a 2nd unit director which stemmed from a prolific career as a martial arts expert in Tae Kwon Do which saw him as champion in numerous tournaments. Perry solidified himself as a full fledge director last year when he helmed the hyper-kinetic action-horror pic Day Shift starring Jamie Foxx. Bautista is, well, Dave Bautista and his record speaks for himself in terms of action as well as other genres. This should be a good one.
“We are so thrilled to be making The Killer’s Gamewith Lionsgate and Endurance,” said Mad Chance’s Lazar who is producing. “We have searched far and wide and we finally found the perfect Joe Flood in Dave Bautista, who balances compelling action and incredible comic timing better than anyone else. And with JJ Perry at the helm, we know this film will deliver the kind of wholly original and unique action that global audiences crave.”
This movie has been kicking around Hollywood for years with Bautista attached and D.J. Caruso set to helm at one time but things change. Check out my original article from 2019 here. Ice Cube was also set to star previously but has since dropped out after delays.
