Talks of a fifth Lethal Weapon Film have been circulating for years now and at this point I think there’s as much of a chance in seeing thar as there is seeing a fourth Expendables film.

Back in January, there was some excitement as those talks amped up a little bit with both Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as well as original director Richard Donner bring mentioned as returning to the hit franchise. But then COVID-19 hit and just like everything else, things have shuttered down so to speak.

Well, there is still a little light at the end of the tunnel as Roger Murtaugh himself, Danny Glover, served up an update on the project in an interview with Variety. Even though it’s still not concrete word that the fifth film will eventually happen, it still is good to hear.

In the interview, Glover stated: “I don’t want to give away the plot on the script that I read, but I found the plot had very strong relevance to some of the things that are happening today. I can say that. But that was in January. History changes so fast. But yes, there’s been talk about it. I can only tell you, if it does happen, there is something extraordinary in it. If Lethal Weapon gives us some sort of contribution to understanding a little bit more. It would be interesting to do. It would be interesting to see how we take this within the political framework we are in; the economic framework that we are in. And especially that framework as opposed to the communities that have been affected by the kind of police violence, the kind of police standards, and the power that they exert as well. And what would be interesting from that vantage point is what that attempt could be like at this particular moment.”

So there you go. There is a script and from Glover’s words it’s a good one. Unfortunately, all three men are getting up there so the window of opportunity is fading fast. Glover is 73, Gibson is 64 and Donner is a whopping 90. It’s nice to hear that there is still news but I’m not holding my breath at this point.

In the meantime, for your viewing pleasure, check out a classic Riggs and Murtaugh moment from the last Lethal Weapon Film as they took on the great Jet Li!
