Well that didn’t take very long. Only after announcing that the acclaimed hit series Cobra Kai, based on the iconic Karate Kid franchise, would be leaving YouTube ahead of it’s season 3 debut, Deadline is reporting that the series has found a new home on Netflix.
The news that Sony Pictures TV was shopping the series around sparked a massive bidding war between Netflix, Hulu and others but in the end, Netflix won out for the third season and the streaming site will also have non exclusive rights to the first two seasons as well.
Another cool part of the article states that Netflix is looking to build within the universe of The Karate Kid meaning there could be potential spin-offs. There is also the option for more seasons of Cobra Kai of course which will probably happen given the show’s track record of success.

For those of you living in a cave, Cobra Kai is the sequel series to The Karate Kid which takes place some thirty years after the films with William Zabka’s Johnny Lawrence taking more of a center stage and becoming somewhat of an anti-hero as he looks to reopen the Cobra Kai dojo. This of course reignites a long feud with Ralph Macchio’s Daniel LaRusso and the stage is set for the rest of the series with a new generation of students caught in the middle.
The series is a perfect blend of nostalgia and freshness all at the same time with Zabka and Macchio diving right back into their iconic roles that everyone grew up on.

There is no release date set for the third season but it will premiere this year. Brian Wright, the VP of Original Series at Netflix stated, “The appeal of The Karate Kid saga is timeless, and Cobra Kai picks up right where it left off without missing a beat. The rivalry between Daniel and Johnny is one for the ages, and the show has a ton of heart and is a lot of fun. We can’t wait to introduce a new generation of fans to Cobra Kai and are thrilled to be its new home around the world.”
Jeff Frost, President of Sony Pictures Television added, “We are so proud of Cobra Kai and are overwhelmed by the massive fan response to the series. Josh, Jon, Hayden, Ralph, William and the entire cast have done such a brilliant job with this sensational series and the huge audience reaction and sentiment for it is a testament to that. We are very thankful to our partners at Netflix and couldn’t be more elated that they have become the new home for this epic saga.”
