Welcome to FOOT FIST FRIDAYS! A weekly dose of fight action where the Action-Flix.com experts share their thoughts on some of the greatest scenes of fisticuffs in action cinema history!
This week on Foot Fist Fridays, resident contributor The Cinema Drunkie tackles a classic scene from Bruce Lee in The Chinese Connection AKA Fist Of Fury where the legend takes on Robert Baker. This is his favorite fight scene of all time and it’s this week’s edition of Foot Fist Friday! Enjoy!!!
So recently, I pegged a question amongst my action writer peers in private. The question was “What is your personal pick for the greatest fight scene ever?” The responses to that question will become its own piece in due time, but they all agreed that that is a difficult choice to make. Just picking a favorite is hard enough, but just one that is considered the best? Sheesh. But I’ll save that conversation for later. What I did want to mention is that although they told me theirs, I never told them mine. And here it is:
My all time favorite fight scene is Bruce Lee vs Robert Baker in The Chinese Connection (aka Fist of Fury).
Yep. Not Bruce vs Chuck. Not Bruce vs Kareem. Bruce vs Robert Baker. Such an epic clash, and has been my favorite ever since I first saw The Chinese Connection at 7 years old. But I know what you’re all thinking: why that one?
Well, there’s a couple of reasons. #1 obviously being the fantastic choreography of the scene. Lee chose well when he picked his real life student Baker to be his opponent for the scene, as their fight chemistry is beautiful to watch. It’s like watching 2 tango partners who’ve been doing this for years getting their big moment. Absolutely amazing.
But it’s also the setting and staging of it all. The “outside” set (which is obviously inside a studio, but who cares, it looks great), the spaghetti western style lead up to the fight, the “shadow hands” from Bruce that received a glorious homage in The Last Dragon. The ending to the fight. Just everything about this scene that makes it so flawless and iconic.
But enough talk. I now present to you… Bruce Lee vs Robert Baker. Enjoy!
