OK, now if you have been reading my posts over the last five years, you will know that I’ve been keeping track of the on again off again fourth Expendables film and with each piece of news that hasn’t come to pass, I have been getting a little less enthusiastic as time marches on.
Stallone has been teasing us relentlessly about a new entry but here we are in 2020 with nothing to show for it. The latest was last 4th of July when he posted on Instagram that he was itching to revisit his character of Barney Ross and his crew of mercs but nothing else was said since.
Well, here we go again and this time reports are saying that a new film has been in development for quite sometime and that Jason Statham, who has co-starred in all three films as Lee Christmas is going to take the lead this time around with Sly taking a back seat but still being involved in the new entry.
The news comes from an exclusive report at The Illuminerdi which states that the new film is titled The Expendables: A Christmas Story which makes sense as Statham’s character is named Lee Christmas. Christmas, as everyone knows is Barney’s right hand man and an expert in bladed weapons and CQB. The article states that Stallone will be felt throughout the movie however and he will have fewer scenes though but his role will be “an emotional one for fans.” Statham’s bad ass character will take “center stage” and lead a team of elite professionals so let the rumor mill run with who should be in this one.
Millennium Films/Nu Image is looking to start filming the movie in the first half of 2020 so hopefully we will get more concrete news soon along with some awesome casting announcements. No other news has been reported on whether any of the other original cast will return but hopefully they get to have one last mission.
With Stallone well into his 70’s now, I think this is the right way to go and Statham is definitely the one to take the reigns as he has always been Barney’s second in command. Statham is coming off the success of Hobbs And Shaw with The Rock so time to strike now and give the fans what they want. Sly seems to want to focus on more Rocky and other projects so it bodes well to let Statham take command of the elite crew. I, for one, am all in for this as I am a huge Statham fan and he excels in any action set piece he is a part of so the franchise would benefit from this shot of adrenaline.
Keep in mind that a fourth Expendables film has been in the works for what seems forever so until cameras are rolling and we have a set cast of action phenoms then I’m reserving caution.
You can bet I’ll keep my eyes on this so you better keep it locked and loaded right here for the return of The Expendables!
While we wait for more 411, check out Statham’s epic fight scene with Scott Adkins from Expendables 2 below!
