As of today, filming has begun on the highly anticipated reboot of Mortal Kombat down in Australia with award winning commercial director Simon McQuiod helming the film in his directorial debut. Casting news has been rampant as of late and now we have a new addition to the cast.
It is being reported that Chinese-German actor Max Huang has won the role of protagonist Kung Lao for the reboot and he joins a cast that already includes Joe Taslim as Sub Zero; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; and Lewis Tan of Wu Assassins in a mystery role.
Huang’s casting should please some people as he is an accomplished martial artist who is also a member of the famous Jackie Chan stunt team. He has worked on such action hits as Kingsman: The Secret Service as well as Police Story 2013 and Chinese Zodiac. Huang is an accomplished Wushu practitioner who is a gold medal winner at the 2009 German Wushu Nationals. No too shabby folks.
In the realm of Mortal Kombat, the character of Kung Lao was introduced in Mortal Kombat II and has a rich history of highs and lows in the storyline.
Kung Lao (Chinese: 功老; pinyin: Gōnglăo) is a fictional character in the media franchise Mortal Kombat. A major hero in the Mortal Kombat series, introduced as a player character in the fighting game Mortal Kombat II in 1993. He is a former Shaolin monk and a former member of the White Lotus Society who stands in the shadow of his ancestor, the Great Kung Lao. Kung Lao is the best friend of the series’ male protagonist named Liu Kang and together they were the main characters and heroes of the spin-off game Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. He gained considerable popularity and favorable critical reception, in large part because of his famous hat, which doubles as a weapon. (Wikipedia)
James Wan of Aquaman and The Conjuring fame serves as producer. According to Yahoo.com, “McQuoid will lead a team of Australian and U.S. filmmakers, including director of photography Germain McMicking (“True Detective,” “Top of the Lake: China Girl”), production designer Naaman Marshall (“Underwater,” “Servant”), editor Scott Gray (“Top of the Lake,” “Daffodils”), and costume designer Cappi Ireland (“Lion,” “The Rover”).”
There should be more casting news In the future and hopefully we will find out who Lewis Tan will be playing. Hopefully the character of Johnny Cage will be added as well as he is one of my favorites.
Filming is now underway and New Line will release Mortal Kombat on March 5th, 2021. Keep it locked and loaded right here for more details to come. FATALITY!
