Iko Uwais certainly has garnered much praise over recent years as on the true legit action stars of this generation, but Uwais unfortunately is still heavily underrated when it comes to North American productions. Uwais has seen much success over seas and in his native Indonesia, but the prolific martial artist/actor and filmmaker is still looking to firmly break down western audiences when it comes to bone breaking entertainment.
Well, Uwais is leveling up for his next western project which will see him unite with prolific filmmaker Albert Hughes who is one half of The Hughes Brothers best known for films like Menace II Society and The Book of Eli which is the dystopian action-drama starring Denzel Washington.
The new collaboration is a new series called Jakarta and Uwais is set to star in with Hughes set to helm the pilot and serve as a producer. Uwais will also executive produce through his newly formed Uwais Pictures production banner. Jakarta hails from writers Kirk Ward and Joshua W. Wagner, with the former also set to serve as showrunner. Hughes and Ward previously worked together on Peacock’s John Wick prequel mini-series The Continental.
Per Variety who broke the news, “the series is set in Indonesia’s capital as the city navigates rapid globalization, drawing on Uwais’ reputation for physically demanding action work, built across films including “The Raid” and “Wu Assassins,” as well as “Mile 22” opposite Mark Wahlberg, and “The Expend4ables. The series is also being described as “a multi-generational family crime series.”
Uwais is having a busy year as he is also set to star in John Radel’s Warrior (Pendekar). The movie is going to be a full-throttle actioner that is set to spotlight the return of legit Silat which is the fighting discipline that Uwais is known for, and which catapulted him into stardom.
Jakarta is being produced by Alcon Entertainment which is best known for making Blade Runner 2049 and the blockbuster sci-fi series The Expanse.
