Wingard directs from a script penned by frequent collaborator Simon Barrett who has worked with the director on the sensational indie action/horror mash up The Guest as well as You’re Next and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. Both came up with the story idea as well. Onslaught features a sensational genre fueled cast to join Arjina including Dan Stevens, a frequent Wingard star of films like The Guest and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire; Drew Starkey (Outer Banks), the one and only Michael Biehn (Aliens, The Terminator), Reginald VelJohnson (who co-starred in the iconic action film Die Hard), Eric Wareheim (Tim & Eric), and Rebecca Hall who also has starred in a few of Wingard’s projects lime the aforementioned Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire as well as Godzilla VS Kong. Also starring as the ultimate weapon is UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Alex “Poatan” Pereira who will certainly bring a legit and ferocious look to the close quarters combat action.
TRAILER REACTION: I have been a fan of Wingard’s ever since I finally checked out The Guest a few years before he did the Monsterverse flicks. He’s definitely a genre filmmaker who loves the types of films that he does, and he always pays homage to the past. Onslaught looks like The Guest ramped up to 100 and while the plot is nothing new, this is definitely A24’s coming out party when it comes to action films. It looks batshit crazy in the best way possible and the action set pieces look like a grounded, tactical chef’s kiss of blood drenched proportions.
Adding a historic genre actor like Michael Biehn into the fray is genius and Arjiona looks like she put in some fantastic work. I’m sure there will be the usual WOKE arguments because, you know, a woman can’t be bad ass or kick ass (rolling eyes as I write this) but I am not one of those people and I am a firm advocate of equal opportunity ass kicking as long as the finished product is good.
I also love the look of the weapons, and the eyes are just ominous and seal the deal. Using a certified MMA champion in Periera is nothing short of fantastic and it will give authenticity to the action design which includes firepower, fisticuffs and bladed weaponry. This looks fun, brutal and nonstop carnage laced goodness.
