Jason Momoa is seeing much success lately having starred in Prime Video’s latest actioner The Wrecking Crew. The film is receiving rave reviews from fans and critics alike for vibing an 80’s retro buddy action film feel with strong chemistry with co-star Dave Bautista and more. The veteran actor is also set to be unleashed as Lobo in this summer’s Supergirl and that being his dream role, fans are expecting great things. Momoa is certainly one of the most dominating names out there and now he’s set his sights on his next project, and it looks like he’s going to be a Helldiver.
Deadline is breaking the news that Momoa is enlisting for the live action adaptation of the bestselling video game Helldivers which throws gamers into an immersive world where an elite unit of warriors who combat a lethal alien race. Yeah, I know it sounds like HALO and pretty much every other alien invasion video game out there, but who really cares if Fast and Furious franchise director Justin Lin can do the IP justice. Lin, who directed two entries of the Fast franchise, has been tapped to direct the film which is being shepherded by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
Per Deadline: The game debuted in 2015 and the sequel, Helldivers 2, sold more than 12 million units across PS5 and PC in the first four months after its 2024 launch. The game recently expanded to Xbox and continues to perform.
Helldivers 2‘s story centers around an elite unit of soldiers — known as Helldivers — who must battle alien creatures threatening to destroy the fictional planet of Super Earth.
Sony has already set a release date for Helldivers and fans of the game won’t have long to wait as the movie is set to hit cinemas next year on November 10th. According to Deadline, Hutch Parker is serving as producer along with PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash. Lin is also producing through his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner.
Well expectation must be tempered even though the latest surge of video game adaptations has been good, Helldivers looks to be nothing more than a summer popcorn sci-fi action flick hitting in the fall. Having Momoa headline speaks volumes for the film and expect a cross between Starship Troopers and the aforementioned Halo. Make no mistake, this is right in my wheelhouse, so I’ll definitely be checking it out.
Lock ‘N Load and stay tuned…
