I’m catching up on the big news of the week as I am once again working but with that, I am behind on certain things. It hasn’t been a great week for Intel as it was announced that Paramount had eighty sixed a Last Ronin TMNT live action adaptation in favor for a Sonic style new film. If that wasn’t bad enough, it has also been confirmed this week that Jon Bernthal’s version of The Punisher who reemerged in season one of Daredevil: Born Again and figured prominently in the finale will not make an encore in season 2.
According to ComicBook.com, “In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, executive producer Sana Amanat confirmed that Frank Castle will not be a part of the show’s second season. When last seen, Frank Castle had just managed a brutal escape from Fisk’s dungeons after being captured by the Taskforce. At the same time, Matt Murdock was beginning to assemble an army to wage war against Mayor Fisk. Fans logically assumed that The Punisher would be a prime candidate for recruitment in Daredevil’s mission to reclaim New York City.”
It is being reported that Frank Castle’s absence from season 2 just as things were getting good is because he will continue his adventure in his one-shot solo outing. Bernthal is also going to make his biggest entrance as The Punisher yet as he will star in the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day opposite Tom Holland’s favorite neighborhood swinging crime fighter. Fans are crying foul though as Bernthal’s brutal and gritty interpretation of the gun toting vigilante will probably be watered down due to the PG-13 nature of the film.
The, as of yet, untitled Marvel Studios Special Presentation with The Punisher is anticipated to hit Disney+ sometime in 2026. The one-shot was actually co-written by Bernthal as well as director Reinaldo Marcus Green and Brad Winderbaum, who is the head of Marvel television has described the show as “really emotional and wild.” Plot details are classified right now but it will probably take place after his escape at the hands of the vigilante task force, and he will be going to war with the Gnucci crime family which is right out of the comics.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, will hit theaters on July 31st, 2026, and is being described as a “a street-level story.” There have been several leaked-onset images showing off Bernthal as Castle mixing it up with Spidey and we will also get the debut of the battle van which is very enticing. There is no word yet if The Punisher solo outing will hit before or after the new Spider-man movie.
While the news of Frank being absent in season 2 of Born Again does suck somewhat as he would be perfect for Matt’s unit of vigilantes that he is putting together, we will still see him twice next year. He will even take his vigilante antics onto the big screen for the first time so who knows, maybe down the road, Bernthal will get his own solo feature film. We shall see.
