Aaron Eckhart continues to roll along as one of DTV’s go to everyman action hero with a new pic that sees him uniting with Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger helmer Renny Harlin. Eckhart is going to entertain the masses in the new futuristic gladiator combat film appropriately titled Trial by Combat. To sweeten the deal, they are promising an 80’s style throwback actioner in the same vein of the types of films that Harlin made back in the day so scroll below for all the latest intel!
According to Deadline: “The film is set in a near future where “judicial combat” has become accepted practice and legal trials are settled by gladiatorial combat between elected “Champions.” It’s a system that rewards corruption and punishes the innocent. Eckhart stars as John Porter, a once-great Champion, chewed up and spat out by the judiciary. Galvanized by a fresh injustice, and fueled with righteous fury, Porter seeks out a judgment day against his old nemesis: a high-stakes battle to the death, in the hope of bringing the whole system crashing down.”
Gladiator style combat matches that decide the fate of regular legal trials? Doesn’t sound that far fetch and we are probably headed that way with the way this world is going so sign me up for a little legal inspired bloodletting. Thunder Road Pictures, who are best known for giving us the blockbuster John Wick franchise, is producing and Harlin will direct from a screenplay penned by Matthew Wilson.
This isn’t the first time that Eckhart, Harlin and Wilson have teamed up. The three united for the action-thriller The Bricklayer and are also putting out the survival thriller Deep Water. Production is set to commence early next year and additional casting is underway.
Architect is handling international sales for Trial by Combat and will be shopping the pic at the American Film market.
“Trial by Combat is a pulsating, epic throwback to classic ’80s and ’90s high-concept, character-driven action thrillers,” stated Architect’s Calum Gray. “It’s also everything you want from a Thunder Road actioner: grounded, thoughtful and intelligent but also propulsive, stylized, and kick-ass. Expertly curated to deliver maximum satisfaction for the audience.”
Eckhart will next be seen in Muzzle: City of Wolves which hits this Friday. That film is a sequel to Muzzle which sees Eckhart playing a rogue K-9 officer who has a rather ferocious partner in a canine with steel teeth. The first film was a down and dirty cop thriller, so this follow up looks to deliver the same.
