Sadly, it looks like the live action GI Joe/Transformers live action crossover film announced at the 2024 CinemaCon is stuck in neutral but there is some hopeful news for fans of the newly formed Energon Universe from Skybound and Image Comics. According to Deadline, both Hasbro and Skydance have officially announced an adult themed animated series based off the universe of comics including Transformers, GI Joe and Robert Kirkman’s newly established Void Rivals. All three comic titles are set in the same universe and have been a resounding success after premiering back in June of 2023.
According to the report, Joe Henderson (Lucifer) has enlisted to both pen the new series and serve as showrunner. The epic crossover show will merge the blockbuster IP’s of Transformers, GI Joe and Void Rivals into a new animated venture that will be adult oriented in nature. Now what that means remains to be seen but it does bode well for fans that are into the line of comics that are rather mature themed. The story did say that the new show will be similar to Kirkman’s hit Amazon Prime series Invincible and will be “broad, with adult sensibility.”

In the comics, “The Energon Universe is set in the present (modern era); the franchise name makes reference to the substance that Transformers need to survive. In the Sacred Ring, there is a war between Agorrians and Zertonians. When two rivals named Darak and Solila crash on a mysterious planetoid, they must work together in order to survive. In the process, they learn a secret that will change everything they believed about their war. Meanwhile, the other war between Autobots and Decepticons on Cybertron expands to Earth, leading to the foundation of G.I. Joe and Cobra in response. A chain of events will cause all those factions to fight against each other, changing the fate of humanity (and the universe) forever.”
Since its premiere in 2023, the Energon Universe has seen massive success for Hasbro with an estimated 7 million combined units sold worldwide. Void Rivals hit first back then with Transformers and 4 GI Joe miniseries launching that October. The full-fledged GI Joe title was then commissioned in November of 2024. Henderson is a comic book and TV runner who served as showrunner on the hit series Lucifer as well as White Collar and Almost Human.
Last year at CinemaCon, Paramount announced a live action crossover between Transformers and GI Joe which was teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and MCU alum Chris Hemsworth was even attached to it at one time. Unfortunately, it looks like the merger of Skydance and Paramount has seemed to put that on the backburner. It was announced afterwards that Michael Bay was eyeing a return to the Transformers live action world which he helped create but now word has been given if this would be the crossover film. As of this report, the crossover is still circling but it’s been radio silent since.
No word on how the show will relate to the comics and what the plot will be so until we receive more intel, we are in a wait and see approach with this animated show as well. Hopefully both the live action and animated show will both see the light of day so we shall see. Lock “N Load and stay tuned…
