Who else was deeply annoyed and angered when Waner Bros. and New Line Cinema decided to shelve the highly anticipated sequel Mortal Kombat II for almost another year? Well, if you follow this website and subsequent podcast, then you probably were pretty pissed off. The move from October 24, 2025, to May 15th of next year was announced because the powers that be are convinced that this is a full on, without a doubt summer popcorn flick. It also helped that the trailer debut was one of the most watched videos of this year which was in the ballpark of 107 million views worldwide which is a record.
Well, today, I am the bringer of good news (well. sort of) as it was officially announced that the video game adaptation is now set to hit early. A WHOLE WEEK EARLY! Yeah, I know but it does bode well as this switch in release dates will give the film more of a chance to make money as it gives it some breathing room with the upcoming Star Wars flick The Mandalorian and Grogu which will arrive on May 22nd.
Mortal Kombat II will now hit theaters on May 8th of 2026, and this new date gives it a few weeks to capture box office coin before the other summer tent pole films start coming out. The only competition for MK II now will be a movie called The Sheep Detectives which stars Hugh Jackman, Emma Thompson, Nicholas Braun, and Nicholas Galitzine. No offense but I don’t think even with the cast, that movie offers any serious competition, but we shall see. Hopefully MK II will make decent money so we can get a few more of these granted if they’re good. The trailer for the sequel looked like it was far superior to the original film, so fans are hopeful.

MK II is once again directed by the first film’s director Simon McQuoid. Lewis Tan returns as the first film’s hero Cole and the rest of the original cast is back as well including Joe Taslim (Sub-Zero), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Mechad Brooks (Jax) and Ludi Lin (Liu Kang). New cast additions include Adeline Rudolph (Kitana), Tati Grabrielle (Jade), Martyn Ford (Shao Kahn), Desmond Chiam (King Jerrod), Ana Thu Nguyen (Queen Sindel), and Damon Herriman (Quan Chi) and Karl Urban as Johnny Cage.
