Not gonna lie. Once I heard that Stallone had dropped out of the proposed Cliffhanger sequel and the company went with a full-on reimagining, I lost interest and ultimately forgot about it. At one time, Sly was attached to return as mountain climbing expert Gabe Walker who in turn now had a daughter who had taken up the mantle of the family business.
Unfortunately, the movie was submarined in development hell for quite some time and Stallone exited the project with the company going full on reboot. Last month it was announced that Row K had acquired full North American distribution rights for the film and now there is an official release date set for next year. Lily James stars in the film and 007 himself, Pierce Brosnan has been attached to star as well most likely in a role that was like Stallone’s role and now, we have a synopsis and some release details for you.
The New Cliffhanger synopsis follows Ray Cooper (Brosnan) “a seasoned mountaineer who runs a luxury chalet in the Dolomites with his daughter. When a weekend excursion with a billionaire’s son turns violent, they are targeted by a group of kidnappers. As the attack unfolds, Ray’s daughter, Naomi, still haunted by a tragic climbing accident, escapes into the mountains and must fight for survival against both nature and her pursuers.” James plays his daughter, and the film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a script penned by Ana Lily Amirpour, Sasha Penn, Mark Bianculli, and Melanie Toast.
