Some new action news coming out of the weekend sees John Cena, who is Hollywood hot right now, and leading funny man Kevin Hart will star in a new action-comedy called The Leading Man. Cena is coming off the success of Prime Video’s Heads of State where he stars along with Idris Elba and has the second season of Peacemaker ready to premiere this month. Hart is also riding high as he usually delivers comic gold in any movie he star in like
A report coming from Deadline says that the new action-comedy spec has been snagged by Netflix who is looking to bolster their filmography arsenal with as much star power as they can, and this one looks to be perfect for their mission statement.
The plot for The Leading Man centers on “a self-absorbed movie star (Cena) who discovers that his co-star/man in the chair (Hart) is an actual agent, and he’s forced to swallow his pride and accept that action stars aren’t really action heroes…while trying to save the world.” This plot is essentially what Cena did in his last flick where he was a former action star who just happens to be the leader of the free world now. Regardless, Cena and Hart should go all in and this will probably be a kinetic time waster.
Jon and Erich Hoeber and wrote the script which Netflix bought and this is actually based on a comic book series created by Jeremy Haun and B. Clay Moore. Cena and Hart will also serve as producers on the movie. The Hoeber brothers also sold another action pic to Netflix called Fast & Loose which will star Bad Boy Will Smith but unfortunately Michael Mann, who was set to reunite with Smith and direct, dropped out due to creative differences. That project is now actively looking for a new director with a fall production start still set.
Hart is Netflix’s go to guy as of recent years as he is also set to appear in 72 Hours, which is a Netflix comedy helmed by Tim Story. Hart has also starred for the streaming service in other films like Fatherhood, Me Time, The Man from Toronto, and Lift.
Lock N Load and stay tuned for more to come.
