Dave Bautista is no stranger to starring in reboots or reimaginings of popular IPs as the wrester turned Hollywood A lister has starred in films like the next gen Kickboxer which featured Alain Moussi and a returning JCVD. Now Bautista is eyeing not one but two new reboots with the actor eyeing roles in both Road House 2 and Highlander. It’s important to note that Bautista has not been confirmed officially for either film, but it still makes for great news.
I should have bet money as I was thinking that Bautista could do justice to a newer version of the Kurgan which Clancy Brown made iconic in the original. Now Deadline is bringing word that Bautista will now star against headliner Henry Cavill in director Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot and will play the Kurgan. There have been massive rumors as to who would be worthy to play the Kurgan have been swirling around ever since the initial announcement for the reboot was mentioned years ago. Bautista would be the perfect choice to portray the savage immortal who takes on Connor MacLeod of the Clan MacLeod.
If Bautista joins Highlander, he will be added to a great cast that already feature Cavill as well as Russell Crowe (Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind), and Marisa Abela (Black Bag, Back to Black).Crowe will take on Ramirez role made famous by the late, great Sean Connery while Abela will be the new Brenda who was first portrayed by Roxanne Hart in the cult classic.
In terms of Road House 2, Bautista is circling to play opposite Jake Gyllenhaal’s Dalton and could be playing the mentor role that Sam Elliot. That project is again being serviced by Amazon MGM Studios and while Guy Ritchie was tapped to helm at one point, he dropped out and now lya Naishuller (Nobody, Hardcore Henry) is in the driver’s seat.
The sequel will further the story of Gyllenhaal’s Elwood Dalton who was a famous UFC fighter who fell on hard times and has since become a bouncer. Conor McGregor, who played the villain of the first film so devilishly gleefully is set to return as well.
Hopefully, both deals will become concrete soon and the only thing now is if Bautista will have time to make both films but I’m sure they will accommodate where need be. Lock N Load and stay tuned!
