It’s easy to forget that comic cons have not only been around for decades but these yearly events for fanboys everywhere were created to celebrate…well you know…comics. Cons have since morphed into pop culture juggernauts over the years to not only include comics but also anything and everything that has to do with entertainment. Movies, TV, video games and, yes, comics are what we live and breathe and with that I bring you some tasty news about the future of the brand-new G.I. Joe label from Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics that was introduced at this year’s SDCC panel.
One thing is clear and this ain’t your daddy’s G.I. Joe as they have taken some extreme liberties with the beloved IP since the title was introduced last year and it’s only gonna get more extreme as we have found out that the one and only Cobra Commander is going to be targeted for assassination from his fellow peers and the only one he can turn to for help is…wait for it…DUKE! That’s right. Two of the franchise’s most iconic characters must team up to survive and I can’t help but say that this is genius and something that no one saw comic.
Before we get into all that, we must first look towards issue 12 and the return of Night Force and the resurrection of the beloved character codenamed Shooter. To all not in the know, Shooter was the Joe’s elite sniper who was killed in the G.I. Joe Declassified run which was published in 2006 by Devil’s Due and written by comic icon Larry Hama. How this all shapes up for issue 12 and how they reintroduce the character will have to wait to be seen but we do have the blistering new cover for you along with all the variants. Scroll the gallery below!

What’s clear from the above covers is that Flint, Lady Jaye and Beachhead will figure prominently in the issue which is a “standalone covert op” story that hails from Joshua Williamson, Marco Fodera and Mike Spicer. This new line of Joe storytelling created by Williamson is separate from everything else and I consider it a reboot if you will, so this Shooter is most likely just a new version. Even though this is a one-shot mission, I think Shooter will survive to see another day this time around.
Now onto the big news I teased at the beginning and that concerns a new war simmering on the horizon. The Dreadnok War is coming and with it, Cobra Commander has been marked for death. Sometimes the enemy of my enemy is my friend and with that mode of thinking, Commander must unite with his archenemy Duke to try and outwit the Dreadnoks and survive the day. Joshua Williamson, Tom Reilly, and Jordie Bellaire bring you the story that is so momentous that it will hit twice a month starting with issue 13 that hits this November. Check out the cover below!

The crew at Skybound also unleashed a SDCC exclusive ashcan which details the future for not just G.I. Joe but the whole Energon Universe including The Transformers and Void Rivals.

This was in relation to the new video that came online on their official YouTube channel which confirms that war is coming to all 3 titles so buckle up and lock n load for more to come!
