Fans looking to scratch that itch for a new apocalyptic actioner need look no further as filmmaker Raul Gasteazoro has you covered with the recently released action-thriller The Protector. Star Marguerite Moreau is looking all bad ass and ferocious in the lead role as she channels the likes of Mad Max and most notably Furiosa in a savage tale of a world gone to hell and woman sworn to protect what is left. Filled with ambitious and brutal action, an important and poignant message and a rousing new heroine, The Protector is essential Saturday night viewing!
Ravaged by water wars, famine, and drought, the West is once again wild—and peace a thing of the past. Children are rare. Water is sacred. Life hangs by a thread. To escape a life-prison sentence, a convict named Key makes a deal with Gael, the ruthless leader of the Revelers gang: lead them onto an Indigenous reservation that hides the last known freshwater source. Surrounded by a deadly minefield, only Key knows the way in. But when she meets a boy who may hold the key to healing the land, her mission changes. Now she must fight not for her freedom, but for a future worth saving.

The film explores urgent themes of water conservation, environmental collapse, and indigenous land sovereignty, wrapped inside a gritty, adrenaline-fueled survival story that dares to ask: What are we willing to protect when there’s nothing left to lose?
Well shot, well edited and filled with ambitious action design that rivals anything seen in big budget blockbusters, The Protector knows what kind of movie it is and while paying homage to the post-apocalyptic films of the past, director Raul Gasteazoro forges a new and brutal path with creative visuals and an immersive experience that hits you over the head with blunt force trauma. It also helps that the supporting cast is stellar including cinema icon Graham Greene who always brings it with his performances.
The story is an important as well as it warns us of what the future could really entail if we don’t take action to save the planet. Moreau more than holds her own in the unforgiving world created by Gasteazoro and shines in the numerous and bloody action sequences. This one flew under my radar at first, but I am glad I finally discovered it, and fans of this kind of no holds barred cinema will enjoy.
