It’s been a long road to say the least for the newest iteration of Red Sonja, but the day has finally arrived, and we have our first look at star Matilda Lutz as she comes out swinging with a deliciously bloody trailer for the long-awaited comic adaptation. Samuel Goldwyn Films just dropped the new teaser a few hours ago and it looks like it could be everything fans could want as a reimagining of the iconic character. The trailer doesn’t skimp on bloody good stuff and Lutz is front and center and looking as ferocious as ever as she takes on an army to achieve her ultimate vengeance. Check out the slicing and dicing complete with new key art below!
Captured. Chained. Forced to fight for survival. Red Sonja must battle her way through the blood-soaked pits of a tyrant’s empire and rally an army of outcasts to reclaim her freedom and take down Dragan and his ruthless bride, Dark Annisia.

M.J. Bassett (Solomon Kane, Rogue) is now the director who is in charge and the screenplay was penned by the duo of Joey Soloway (Transparent) and Tasha Huo (Netflix’s Tomb Raider anime). Robert Sheehan (The Umbrella Academy), Wallis Day (Batwoman), Martyn Ford (Those About to Die), Michael Bisping (Den of Thieves), with Phillip Winchester (Strike Back) and Trevor Eve (Waking the Dead).
We all know that happened with the Conan reboot that starred Jason Momoa taking over for Arnold who starred in the first two. That film fumbled the ball immensely and even Momoa has recently gone on record as saying the movie is terrible. Let’s hope that the same fate doesn’t inflict Red Sonja as we are in dire need of a decent sword and sorcery flick as they are hard to clear r by these days. The 80’s were a great time that saw many kick ass films like this come out including Arnold’s two films as well as The Sword and the Sorcerer.
I will say that images of Lutz that have been teased thus far does the character justice. Red Sonja was created Robert E. Howard who also created Conan and the 1985 flick was sort of a pseudo sequel for Arnie who was only supposed to have a glorified cameo in the movie but was featured more prominently. For what it’s worth, I love the Brigitte Nielsen and Arnie starring original in all its gratuitous tongue in cheek ambiance and watch it all the time. I was able to see it in theaters when it came out back in the day and always break out my DVD on occasion.
The trailer looks fantastic, and the hard R rating is in full effect with this one so hardcore fans will certainly get their fill of blood and dismembered body parts. Lutz is no stranger to onscreen chaos, mayhem and ultra-violence having starred in films like Revenge and Rings. Director M.J. Bassett looks to have known the assignment, and this looks like a good time.
