We can officially cue up Bon Jovi’s Blaze of Glory! Having been teased for a few years now, it looks like a third Young Guns movie is officially moving forward! The news came out of the Film and Media Day at the New Mexico State Capitol with franchise star Emilio Estevez announcing it and that he will also direct and that the third entry will shoot this Fall on location in New Mexico. Estevez co-wrote the new script with franchise regular John Fusco. To further sweeten the story, it appears that Lou Diamond Phillipos, who played Chavez Y Chavez in both films, and Christian Slater, who played Arkansas Dave will also return!
Check out the official announcement made by Estevez himself below!

It may strike fans as a little weird that Phillips and Slater will be returning as both of their characters essentially met their fates in the second movie. It does bode well for this that both did not die onscreen so there is that. Chavez went off on his own to succumb to his wounds with the symbolic pale white horse coming for him while it was announced that Arkansas Dave was beheaded in the movie’s epilogue. Estevez’s Billy the Kid did survive his historic meeting with Pat Garrett played by William Peterson and was shown as an older man in both the beginning and ending bookends to the film recounting his adventures to a reporter. History notes that Billy was shot in the back by Garrett, but the movie switched things up where that was concerned.

This is certainly exciting news, and that Estevez is taking the reins to ensure that it is done right is even more exciting. Estevez joked about the third film’s title saying that he has heard all of the supposed names that have come across including Old Guns and Ancient Guns, but it appears that the official title, as of now, will be Young Guns 3: Dead or Alive. Cue the Bon Jovi song please and thank you.
“We’ve started the ball rolling on Young Guns 3,” Estevez stated, ”I’ve heard all the jokes: Old Guns, Ancient Guns. You can hold on to those.”
Needless to say, the Young Guns movies are two of my all-time favorite Westerns ever with its eclectic mix of old school bravado, blazing shoot outs, standout characters and a modern style score. I was officially on board when all this was announced the first time and I am, definitely on board now.
Anyway, I digress, and in the meantime, while we wait for more news, watch the rousing finale from the first installment below to satisfy your need for all things guns blazing action! “Reap it Murphy, you son of a bitch!” I love this ending!!!
