Yes, it is true that many action films nowadays have a resemblance to that famous franchise that started so modest around a decade ago. You know the one I’m talking about. Stars somebody named Keanu wand it took Gun Fu to a whole new level and reinvigorated a decaying action cinema. Combine the essence of that franchise with Japan, which is arguably one of the best outputs of adrenaline cinema over the years and you usually have a recipe for success and even though the hitman or assassin trope has been done to death, if someone does it right, then you can make as many of these as you like.
Case in point, Netflix is rolling out their latest international barnburner this month complete with dark suits, hyper-fierce action design and a massive body count that John J. Rambo will be proud of. The film is called Demon City, and it hails from director Seiji Tanaka (Melancholic) and stars Toma Ikuta as an assassin who tries to once again live a normal life but must brandish his killing ways when his family is mercilessly slaughtered. Watch the new trailer below and partake in all the carnage.
Official Synopsis: In Demon City, Toma Ikuta takes on the role of Shuhei Sakata, a legendary hitman on a quest for vengeance after the brutal murder of his wife and daughter by the Kimen-gumi — a shadowy organization of masked criminals. Set in the provincial city of Shinjo, this electrifying revenge tragedy follows Sakata as he navigates a world of crime and retribution. The trailer teases the heart-pounding action and emotional depth of Sakata’s journey, while the key art captures him as a vengeful “demon” wielding an axe, ready to face his foes.

Starring as well is a sensational cast that includes Matsuya Onoe, Masahiro Higashide, Masanobu Takashima, and Mio Tanaka. Takashi Tanimoto, who is known for handling the action in such film like 47 Ronin and 2024’s City Hunter, handles the fight and action choreography, and fans should swallow this one up with its visceral and raw violence in its set pieces and emotional range in its dramatic storytelling.
