Is it Election Day? Oh, I didn’t know (Hell in a handbasket I tell you). Well, the action cinema intel train keeps chugging along to make us all forget about just how screwed up things are and now we have word that Star Wars alum Daisy Ridley is tacking up and putting the work in for a starring role in Casino Royale’s Martin Campbell latest actioner titled Dedication (insert groans here from people who can’t accept a woman kicking ass in movies).
Dedication will star Ridley as “Major Billie Jean Parker (Ridley), a decorated Marine Corps commander who is relieved of duty after a high-stakes mission in the Philippines results in civilian casualties, despite capturing anarchist leader Omar Romatas. Facing the loss of her career, she visits her dying father, Clyde, a former Marine, who asks her to attend a dedication ceremony for a school building named in his honor. The event takes a deadly turn when Omar Romatas’s vengeful son, Bento, launches an assault, taking hostages. Forced back into combat, Billie Jean sets traps and executes precise strikes to outwit the attackers. Her tactical instincts and ruthless efficiency shift the fight, as she confronts her past and proves her worth in a relentless battle that will define her legacy.”
Highland Film Group is bringing the action pic to the American Film Market for distribution sales. Dan Gordon (Wyatt Earp, The Hurricane) penned the script which sees Gemstone Films Ltd., Phil Hunt (Tar, Talk to Me), Valentin Dimitrov (Lionsgate’s The Hitman’s Bodyguard), and Sagiv Diamant (We Die Young) producing.
“What a thrill to collaborate with a director of Martin Campbell’s pedigree whose eye for big-scale action was on spectacular display in the Bond franchise,” Highland Film Group CEO Arianne Fraser said in an official statement. “Daisy Ridley will perfectly embody the multiple facets of a fallen war hero who is forced into combat mode one last time.”
Ridley certainly executed the physical stuff well in her turn as Rey in the Star Wars sequel series so it bodes well to see her do the traditional action thing and see what she can do with some hopefully slick action choreography. Campbell is definitely established as a premiere filmmaker and his experience in action cinema helps sell this one to the fans.
Lock N Load and stay tuned!
