Idris Elba is no stranger to action films having starred in numerous high-octane flicks like Hobbs & Shaw, The Suicide Squad and Bastille Day. Elba is a natural acting talent and one that can transcend genres and now he’s ready to lay the hammer down a new film called…you guessed it…Hammer Down! In the new movie, Elba is doubling down as a truck driver who lives by The Transporter code of no questions asked, and it gets him into trouble when a group of mercenaries want what he’s driving.
The movie is going to be helmed by first time director Simon Hatt who has worked as an associate producer, executive producer, and co-producer on a variety of James Gunn films including The Suicide Squad and Guardians of the Galaxy. Hatt also penned the script which hails from a short film of the same name that starred This is Us star Chris Sullivan and was also directed by Hatt.
Check out the full synopsis here! “Mac, is the best at what he does, driving a big rig truck across the country with a “no questions asked” policy about the goods he transports. When he takes his tenacious teenage daughter along for a job, they are tracked and attacked by a relentless group of criminals that will stop at nothing to secure the consignment he has been entrusted to deliver. Pursued by merciless killers and with the police hot on their trail, Mac and his daughter must work together to prevent the cargo falling into dangerous hands and survive to live another day.”
Elba is also producing via his 22 Summers production banner as well as Charles Roven, who won his first Oscar earlier this year for best picture winner Oppenheimer. The film will be brought to next week’s American Film market courtesy of Black Bear.
Elba certainly has the gravitas and physicality to carry off action films well into his later years similar to Liam Neeson so I’m always on board when Elba is involved in a thriller. I love the angle that his character is going to be like Statham’s Frank Martin in the Transporter series and now it’s being detailed to the world of trucking. Not original but certainly a recipe for ferocious energy. Lock N Load and stay tuned!
