More and more each day. my enthusiasm for director Fede Alavarez’s Alien: Romulus grows, and this is nothing short of amazing as when the project was first announced, I couldn’t have cared less about it. Fast forward to now and with the film set for a theatrical release a few months away in August, every little snippet of intel I get for the latest entry in the blockbuster sci-fi/horror franchise builds my joy to a pulsating crescendo.
The initial teaser definitely executed its job to perfection and I’m sure we will get a longer trailer to sink out teeth into any day now but for now we have a new image of final girl star Cailee Spaeny channeling iconic franchise actress Sigourney Weaver with pulse rifle to boot. Entertainment Weekly has unveiled the new photo and you can scroll below for the reveal!

My excitement for Alien: Romulus is further fueled by the fact that Alvarez has teased that his installment is a wonderous blend of both Alien and Aliens. To hear Alvarez explain it, it seems that the film will slow build the horror elements with the xenomorph before erupting into full on Cameron mode in the last act. A blending of the only two worthwhile entire in the series. Yes please.
The director went on to explain his stance of how you get an Alien fan to choose between both. Simple answer. You simply do both. “To ask an Alien fan to choose between [Alien and Aliens] is a perverse question. So I thought, ‘How do I do both?’” He then continued by saying, “There’s a moment where the characters are walking around areas familiar from the Nostromo. Then they cross through that building and on the other side: boom! You’re in a hallway that looks like Hadley’s Hope [from Aliens].“
Spaeny certainly looks solid in the role and from what I saw of her in Civil War, she’s got the acting chops so let’s see her wage a little war on xenomorphs. I, for one, cannot wait to see how this one blends the two and seeing the cast rock some M-41A Pulse rifles like its 1986 all over again is worth the price of admission alone.

Spaeny stars along with David Jonsson (Industry), Isabela Merced (Madame Web), Archie Renaux (Shadow and Bone), Spike Fearn (The Batman), and Aileen Wu (Away from Home). Spaeny is most likely the final girl of the film, like I said earlier, and here’s hoping Ripley’s can-do spirit enters her body so she can do battle with the iconic monster and represent for the human race.
Alien: Romulus looks to pay homage to the original Ridley Scott classic Alien with the look and feel of this being a slasher pic with a Xenomorph as the prime antagonist but now we know that there will be Cameron style action to boot. We also do know that the timeline for this installment rests between Alien and Aliens but there will be no connection to any other films of the franchise. looks like the ultra-updated looking pulse rifle is the only returning character from previous entries. I still wish we got a full-on sequel to James Cameron’s Aliens with Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn reprising their roles of Ellen Ripley and Dwayne Hicks respectively, but this is looking promising although it’s only a minute, but you know me, I’m a fan of back in the day when there weren’t twenty trailers for one movie that gave everything away before it even opened. I’d be fine if this was the only teaser we got but you know that’s not gonna happen. It definitely looks more fan friendly then Scott’s last two films Promethius and Alien: Covenant. The addition of the bad ass weaponry from Aliens is a nice touch and here’s hoping it gets used a lot like in the second war film of the franchise. After all, Riley didn’t have any automatic firepower in the first one, so things are looking a little better for Spaeny.

Alien: Romulus will hopefully do its job and terrorize moviegoers when it hits theaters this summer on August 16th!
