After the debacle that is the new He-Man casting, for further details, read my disappointment here, I am now fully on board with this latest casting rumor. Deadline is bringing word that Thor himself, Chris Hemsworth, is in talks to headline the highly anticipated G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover that was first teased at the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Let me reiterate. He is now in talks. What this means is that a contract is not official so it could go awry at any point but usually when they announce that a star is in talks, they are close to signing the deal.
Hemsworth is next to be seen, well heard, as the new voice of Optimus Prime in the Paramount Animation & Hasbro’s Transformers One which is ready to hit theaters on September 20, 2024. The report doesn’t say what role Hemsworth will be playing but smart money says that the powers that be will want the former MCU star to be seen as well so he will probably be playing a Joe in the future project.
Now the speculation will commence as to which Joe it will be. Easy bets say Duke, but you never know as there are multiple popular characters in the universe. The character of Duke was recently seen in comic book form as he headlines a Transformers crossover with his self-titled mini-series that just recently finished its run. Duke is also battling Cobra as well in the newly resurrected G.I. Joe run from Skybound Entertainment, so it looks like a safe bet. Let’s have some fun though and chat up who we would like to see him play. Besides Hemsworth at this time, there is still no director, writer or additional cast members linked to the project yet.

Hemsworth has really cemented himself as an action star with his Extraction franchise and fans know that he can jock up with the military themed set pieces when the time calls for it.
G.I. Joe and the Transformers have battled and teamed up multiple times in the comics in the 80’s up till today but this will be the first live action/CGI feature film for Hasbro’s top two IP’s. Paramount confirmed the big film crossover at the recent CinemaCon.
The plot for the first meeting is said to originate from one of the stories in the Marvel 1980’s era. Both G.I. Joe and Transformers have seen a resurgence in comic book form thanks to Skybound Entertainment who is rolling out new titles each month. Along with the new runs of G.I. Joe and Transformers, there is also the current Duke and Cobra Commander titles on the shelves a swell with Destro #1 set to hit the comic shelves on June 19th as well as Scarlett initiating her own run-on June 5th. It really is a great time to be a fan of both and of comic books.
Now this crossover is very ambitious, and fans will surely be awaiting to see what characters from both IP’s that make it into the film. We will all have our fan favorites that we want to see but we can’t have all of them in one movie unfortunately. As long as Snake is present, I’ll be a happy camper.
Now that Hemsworth is on board, or close to being on board, I expect more big name stars to join in. Who knows, Henry Golding could reprise the role of Snake even though that movie was a flop.
