Continuing the successful string of stunt professionals turned filmmakers, J.J. “Loco” Perry made a splash with his directorial debut of Day Shift which starred Jamie Foxx and Scott Adkins. Perry, a master of the martial arts and on-screen combat choreography for decades now is back in the director’s chair, and he’s got Dave Bautista and Samuel L. Jackson to paint his next canvas with. Deadline, who gets all the great exclusives, has brought word that Perry will direct a new sci-fi themed actioner titled Afterburn which will see Bautista and Jackson navigating a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a solar flare.
Afterburn will be a film adaptation of the comic book series of the same name and the official synopsis reads: “Dave Bautista will play Jake, an ex-soldier who works as a treasure hunter recovering valuable objects from the old world for powerful clients. His latest mission is to team up with freedom fighter Drea to recover the Mona Lisa before an unhinged warlord gets there first.” Jackson will co-star as a freedom fighter named Valentine.

Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe are producing via their Original Films production banner. Steve Richards will also produce via Endurance Media and Dave Bautista as well with his Dogbone Entertainment company. It’s been a long and winding road for all involved as this project has been in development hell for over six years now, but it looks like the light is finally at the end of the tunnel.
“Afterburn is a terrific action story, combining the fun of Indiana Jones with the near future world building of Children of Men,” Jaffe said in a statement. “J.J. is going to bring this to life in a thrilling way, using real practical stunt work to create authentic, visceral set pieces. Dave is one of the leading action stars in the world today, as well as being an actor with real soul and versatility. So excited to be making Afterburn with them both.“
I’ve been a fan of Perry’s for years now with all the action movies he’s appeared in and have been thoroughly entertained with the projects where he worked on behind the cameras as well. Perry is a true master craftsman in action cinema so expect good things from the adrenaline department on Afterburn. He’s the perfect choice to steer the boat with practical effects and stunt work which will most assuredly give the movie an old-school tinge to it.
